Banging start to VW Cup season

The first round of the 2012 VW Cup championship season started with a bang at Zwartkops Raceway on Saturday, March 3, 2012. Many of the favourites crashed out in a huge collision and the pace car was out while the track was cleared of debris.

As a result, six cars were unable to make the finish and there will be a few very busy workshops over the next few weeks as new cars are being constructed. Popular drivers Jordan Pepper, Eddie Rodriquez, Adrian Wood and Andrea Bate are likely to require entirely new bodies following the group prang in Saturday’s season opener.

Despite the dramatic start for some, others were celebrating a great start to season.

A WINNING START, BUT...

Victory in race one went to defending champion Devin Robertson who showed he had maintained his winning form after starting fourth on the grid. Bryan Morgan and Kelvin van der Linde finished second and third.

A three-place penalty was, however, handed to Robertson after he made contact with Pepper in their first race. With Robertson off the podium, Robyn Kruger then moved into third.

Robyn and brother Jeffrey Kruger had their best race weekend yet with her fourth finish in the first race and Jeffrey’s second place in race two. Robyn’s seventh position in the final race was sufficient to see her place third overall for the day.

For Van der Linde, the highlight of the day was winning race two and his second position overall for the day – his best result in the series to date.

Morgan's second in race one was followed by third finish in race two – and overall victory for the opening round of the 2012 VW Cup championship.
