Bizarre SBK crash at Donington

Motorcycle racing is dangerous, no question. For this precise reason it is also exciting and makes, in general, for a much better spectacle than F1.

During the second round of the Superbike world championship at Britain’s fearsomely fast Donington Park circuit, Ducati privateer Maxime Berger had one of the most bizarre accidents in motorcycle racing history.

Instead of suffering a massive tank slapper or understeering into the kitty litter, Berger’s rear wheel hub summarily broke off.

Fortunately the Frenchman was accelerating slowly out of a second-gear corner when the hub of his Ducati 1198R’s rear wheel failed spectacularly, forcing the young racer into a most bizarre of crashes.

The Supersonic racing team he rides for would do well to seriously interrogate the quality control at their wheel supplier.

The European round of the Superbike world championship proved controversial as 2010 champion, Max Biaggi, underperformed badly, with Marco Melandri and Carlos Checa taking the two race victories on offer.

Biaggi slapped Melandri at the end of qualifying, earning himself the ire of the pitlane and a R30 000 fine.
