Aprilia 'thinking about' MotoGP

Considering arch rival Ducati’s success in MotoGP since Aprilia left in 2004, it's fair to assume the Noale-based manufacturer has some unfinished business regarding the FIA’s headline two-wheeled formula.

Aprilia’s 21st century MotoGP tenure was rather short (2002-2004) during which it struggled to sort the powerful yet temperamental RS3 Cube. Entering the four-stroke Superbike world championship instead, Aprilia has slowly been rolling onto the pace.

Measured in absolute terms since 2005, it still trails Ducati by quite some margin yet Max Biaggi is currently second in the championship onboard the RSV4. Aprilia has set a Superbike racing top speed record at Monza of 330km/h recently too.

Aprilia motorsport boss Gigi Dall’Igna has confirmed the company is yearning for MotoGP. "For sure we are thinking about MotoGP. It is normal for Aprilia racing to do this but for the moment our focus is on winning the world Superbike Championship – all our effort is in this."

"In the past Aprilia racing was for sure a good racing department, but we specialised on the two strokes. The WSB project has given us the knowledge and mentality for four strokes. We had to move in to four strokes and I think that we have won this battle."

"At the moment we are thinking about MotoGP, we are looking at ways to prepare, but there is no fixed plan. Our focus remains to win in WSB."
