Robert Wolk has won the South African 2013 Formula VW title after a fantastic race at the Zwartkops Raceway in Gauteng.
ZWARTKOPS, Gauteng - Robert Wolk is the 2013 Formula VW champion after finishing second during the race held at Zwartkops on August 31.
The race was won by Chris Shorter, his first in the series. Pole-starter Werner Scholtz and Nicholas van Weely crashed, leading to Scholtz’s retirement from the race after he lost his rear wing. Weely soldiered on without his front wing.
ENGINE WOES
The Weely/Scholtz crash enabled Shorter to win the race, followed by Wolk and Sebastian Lanzetti in second and third respectively.
During race two, Wolk was forced to retire due to blown engine which allowed Scholtz to claim his first race of the 2013 season.
Lanzetti finished in second followed by Weely in third. Race one winner Shorter settled for fourth place, while Matthew Merton retired with mechanical trouble.
Jason Campos finished both races on his debut in Formula Volkswagen, achieving sixth place in race one and fifth in race two.
FORMULA 1600
In Formula 1600, Class A competitor Scott Temple won the first 10-lap race ahead of Bevan Williams and Graham Hepburn (Mygale). Williams and Hepburn had mechanical problems.
Jason Campos (Mygale) retired with a broken side shaft while his brother Keegan Campos (Mygale) had transmission issues.
CLASS B
In Class B, George Ferreira (Mygale) claimed the 2013 Class B title for 2013. In a shortened RAc 2, Jason Campos finished ahead of Temple, Williams (third) and Hepburn (fourth).
Round eight of the 2013 championship will be run at Killarney in Cape Town on October 5 2013.
