New Jeep Cherokee
The new Jeep Cherokee has been dramatically redesigned, but remains a true off-roader with a choice of two four-wheel drive systems.
The Cherokee's exterior takes on a decidedly more rugged look with sharper angles and a more upright stance.
This physical revision has also seemingly influenced the vehicle's driving personality, with Jeep claiming a significant improvement in its on-road handling. It uses a new independent front and five-link rear suspension arrangement.
For off-road exploits, a new Selec-Trac II full-time four-wheel drive system has been added to complement Command-Trac, a part-time four-wheel drive system. However, both systems are Jeep Trail Rated.
Power is sourced from a 3.7-litre V6 with 157 kW on tap at 5 200 r/min and 319 Nm of torque at 4 000 r/min. A six-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission will be available.
New Cherokee also comes with a brace of safety equipment including ESP, ERM, advanced ABS, tyre pressure monitor and all-speed traction control.
It also offers the MyGIG multimedia infortainment system for the first time that allows audio, navigation, entertainment and communication functions to be completely integrated. MyGIG offers touch-screen and voice controls and has a 20GB hard drive for storing music and other data.
The Jeep Cherokee is expected to go on sale in South Africa in the second quarter of 2008.
