Renault facelifts, boosts Clio

2009-02-06 09:01

Renault’s third generation Clio will be shown with a sharpened visage, GT performance derivative and integrated GPS at the Geneva motor show soon.

Styling updates include comprehensive colour coding treatment for all exterior body panels, rectangular front headlights and a larger below-bumper air intake. These new details render a front view more in line with Clio’s larger Megane and Laguna siblings and majors on geometric proportions, moving Clio’s styling away from its current, ovoid design theme.

    Integrated GPS from the lowlands

The minimalist interior design is left largely untouched, but for the optional integrated navigation system, a co-branded exercise with Dutch GPS specialists TomTom.

Sporting a 14.7cm colour screen (larger than portable GPS systems) the Clio’s Carminat GPS is able to display bird-eye view maps, render speed limit information and traffic warnings.  It’s also able to locate euphemistically named ‘safety’ cameras too – which is quite ironic considering the Dutch invented the speed camera.

    Junior R27?

For Clio drivers keen on a sportier experience, without going all out for one of the Dieppe prepared Renaultsport products, there is the new GT option.

Aesthetically the GT features distinguishing dual exhausts pipes and a rear lip spoiler, whilst the revised side sills and a gloss black front grille round off the styling package.

The car’s exclusive Malta Blue colour scheme (echoing early Clio 197s) and lowered ride height (thanks to performance orientated GT suspension) should ensure it makes the grade as a junior RS hot hatch image machine.

No engine details for the GT are available as yet. Expect 2l power though, in a state of tune somewhere between the 99kW and 145kW versions seen in the Laguna/Megane and frantic Clio Sport locally.

The facelifted Clio range is due to go on sale in Europe by the second quarter.

No way, I'm not a Renault fan, but the previous model was much nicer. the front looks horrible.

In reality, their after sales service is poor, quality problems on their cars and very expensive maintainance. For me, it's look good but I will never ever buy a Renault in my life again.

Why does everybody say the services are expensive. I am on my second Clio (first was over 300000km in a 1.4 Clio 2 with no problems except a waterpump failure at 60000km, and now at 30000km in Clio 3). The services so far has been very cheap. The standard services were R650. Check your facts!

The cars from France always look good. they also, pound for pound are better specced. There are only three problems that you have to live with. 1) Expensive maintenance (we are talking not less than R2000 for a minor service). 2) Customer "feel", sometime you actually feel guilty for showing up with your broken car. 3) If the car breaks and a part has to be ordered, you will have no car for a few months. Otherwise when all is fine, great product.

Renault finally seems to be getting their act together. Slowly, but surely. Had my Megane II serviced the other day and had a very pleasant experience.

This car looks just ok but not great. The best looking small hatch for looks, performance and best value for money is the Seat Ibiza Cupra (2009 model) which unfortunately wont be coming to SA.

Gorgeous. But now that there is a "facelift", how will this affect resale values on current renault 3 models? Just a question?not a statement.

I have always thought the Clio needed a bit of attention now that the Sandero is due to be launched here. I wonder how long it will take before it is released here.

Nice job, but unfortunately Renault have a lot of work to do in the customer relations department. Will be expensive to maintain

Wow! This facelift really works. I always liked the wat Renaults look, but after driving 3, all with problems, never again. Great looking car though. Good luck.
