New Volvo sedan's local lineup

2010-02-19 13:33

The all-new Volvo S60 comes to South Africa (probably) early in 2011 and Volvo Car SA has released details of its local lineup.

The executive sedan arrives in South Africa with three engine derivatives: T6, 2.0T and D5.

The flagship 3.0-litre inline six T6 produces has an output of 224 kW and 440 Nm while a turbocharged four-cylinder 2.0-litre will be the initial entry point into the range with 149 kW and 300 Nm on tap.

The 2.4-litre D5 engine kicks off the model’s diesel assault with power of 151 kW and 420 Nm of torque.

The S60 range will be expanded to include the 176 kW T5, and 132- and 110-kW versions of the 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine.

Along with new engines, a lot of the new car’s detail lies beneath the metal.

For example, two chassis options are offered with S60 with the sportier dynamic chassis (rather than the softer comfort chassis) standard on cars issued for the South African market.

All-new S60 will be shown for the first time at Geneva, but more detail pertaining to the local lineup – including prices – will be made available ahead of its launch here.

@ANON - clearly you know nothing about cars and cannot afford a classy car like a Volvo or for that matter even driven one to make such statements, so keep your cheap comments to yourself and remain anon.

I had a 2001 S60 2.4t R 248K new and my Girlfriend bought a 2002 325I R272k. On trade in in 2007, I got R 80 K (on my new S40) and she R 100k (on her new 330I)....so I question trade in perceptions...

I'll definitely own one but I don't think I'll get rid of my S40. I love it.

One day when I have the money, I would like to own a Volvo. Specifically an XC60 and a S60. These models have jumped ahead of the Germans. Not because of sporty driving dynamics. That is useless to me since I am not a racing driver. Comfort above all. The spacious and serene Volvo interiors leave the cramped, black, serious and sporty German interiors behind.

@Bundi - but you will buy a Land Rover that is owned by Tata right? Get over yourself...just because it is owned by another company doesn't mean THEY build it on behalf of Volvo...it means they get the funding they need to make the car...

Good cars, but the trade in .... like they say "Volvo for Life" you never get rid of it!!

What a beauty.... expect prices to be very affordable. I'll be happy to pay 350 grands for the 2.0T. Won't you say that is value for money?

Is Volvo not owned by Geely now?? In that case not for me thanks!!

Kind of a cross between a Hyundai Accent from the front and some cheap chinese brand from the back. Such a shame volvo never got new owners to save what is clearly a dying brand under the current owners.

As stunning as I knew it would be. But I allready bought the stunning XC60 last month. And Mike, I got R100 000 tade-in on my 2005 S40 with 165 000km on the clock! What low trade in value?

I like it...this looks very grown up. Hope it's not heavy though.

Mike, it's because they aren't popular in South Africa. It works like that in any country, the least popular cars have a lower trade in. I drive a Volvo and must tell you it's the best car I've ever had, Solid, no rattles after 5yrs, most comfortables seat in it's class as well as the best sound system in class. If you go to Europe and Scandanavia they are a lot more popular and in some coutries more so that the German 3, now in those coutries the trade in is par with the German 3. Google some sites and see. What this means is if you buy used in SA you get a lot more car for your money.

I'm so disappointed their is no 5 cylinder petrol anymore. What a fantastic sounding engine. I guess the green nonsense has made that configuration obsolete. Oh well, it's a late model current S60 for me then.

The dash looks a bit drab I must say. I have the S80 V* AWD. Although my dash is drab enough the new one looks even worse. One thing about Volvo, they maintain consistency across their ranges as far as design goes. Even the S40 looks similar to the S80. @Mike - even here in the Middle East the second hand value plummets. Cannot understand why as these are magnificent cars.

Volvo is for stuck up old people. its nothing special.... but hey, if you like it... you are entitled to your wrong opinion!

Very, very nice. And no doubt will have impressive and super comfy 'sofa-like' seats just like it's predecessor. As a happy former S60 owner, I've got to say, Very good effort here Volvo!
Veerrry nice!
2/19/2010 3:35 PM
Mmmm, this is going to be a "nice" problem for me when I have to decide between this beauty and the XC60 in a couple of months' time. I currently have a 2008 S60 2.0T and it is best, nicest, most comfortable and quiet and safe car I have ever had.

Eugh... the back lights that fall on the boot look like the Audi A4's lights, and all together it looks like a eagle in profile. Love the front though.

I just hope it does not have 2 backseats, but a bench, or an option for one. Otherwise it will be rather impractical.

Please Volvo explain the long wait for the car why dont you release it now why wait till 2011?? I mean now all your customers know that a new model is coming out next year who would be dumb enough to buy the current model??

I want one. I currently have a 2005 S-60 D5 and it is the best car I have ever owned. It is solid, confortable and nothing ever goes wrong. At 135 000km it is only just run in. A colleague has the same model with 220 000km on it, also trouble free.
