Renault wants its all-new five-door hatchback Sandero to appeal to the younger owner and prices will start at a little under R100 000.
Renault budget-beater's SA reveal
When Renault SA first revealed its plans for its first foray in the hotly contested budget segment of the local market, plans were to launch a car that was affordable to run and spacious enough to suit a range of needs.
The Sandero hatchback will be manufactured locally at alliance partner Nissan's Rosslyn facility and will be launched locally in February.
Very few details are being made available at the Johannesburg show, other than pricing for the car that Renault says will be practical with a list of luxury features, will start at R99 950.
The engine line-up comprises two eight-valve petrol engines. The 1.4-litre produces 55 kW at 5 500 r/min and 112 Nm oat 3 000 r/min.
The 1.6-litre unit develops 128 Nm at 3 000 r/min and has a peak torque figure of 128 Nm at 3 000 r/min.
Both units are mated with a five-speed manual gearbox.
Renault claims fuel consumption on a combined cycle of 7.0 l/100 km and 7.2 l/100 km for the 1.4- and 1.6-litre, respectively.
