LONDON, England - Venezuelan Pastor Maldonado will race for Williams again in 2012 with Finland's Valtteri Bottas handed the role of reserve, the F1 team has announced.
There was no mention of the team's second race driver; Brazilian veteran Rubens Barrichello was hoping to stay aboard for a 20th season.
Maldonado, a GP2 champion who brings considerable funding to the team from his country's state oil company, scored only one point in his rookie season to Barrichello's four.
WORST SEASON
He had been expected to stay on but Williams triggered some uncertainty when the official entry list was published on Wednesday as a no-name brand.
Last season was the worst in the history of one of F1's historically most successful teams - ninth overall.
Principal and founder Frank Williams said Maldonado had, nonetheless, shown his potential. He crashed in Monaco while sixth and scored his sole point in Belgium.
The other driver, he added, would be identified in due course. Any excuse for another media release...
