Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel took pole position for his home German Grand Prix on Saturday.
The 23-year-old's sixth pole in 11 races, and Red Bull's 10th, denied Ferrari their first since 2008 by a wafer-thin margin.
Vettel was just 0.002 of a second quicker than Spaniard Fernando Alonso, who had been top of the timesheets in the first two parts of qualifying.
Brazilian Felipe Massa qualified third with Red Bull's Australian Mark Webber fourth.
McLaren's world champion Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton, the overall leeder, will line up alongside each other on the third row.
