Schumi slammed as 'arrogant'

2010-03-16 08:18

The Italian press has poured scorn on Michael Schumacher's return to F1.

The 41-year-old German, whose previous race had been at the wheel of a Ferrari in 2006, managed sixth place in Bahrain after being outpaced all weekend by his young Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg.

Large elements of Italy saw Schumacher's decision to return with a rival team as an act of deceit, and the Genoa-based Il Secolo XIX newspaper now crowns him the "world champion of arrogance".

La Gazzetta dello Sport joked that the German failed to turn up in the island Kingdom, and Corriere della Sera said the anonymous performance had been a "strange Sunday afternoon for Herr Michael".

But Schumacher himself said he was happy with his comeback, and Mercedes' chief executive Nick Fry insisted that the team's new driver had finished the event "in great spirits" and excellent physical shape.

"All in all I have to say I am very, very happy and proud about how it went, considering I was completely out for three years and did not have a lot of driving for preparation," Schumacher told his official website on Monday.

I think he did as well as he could have. The cars not great and he's a little rusty. He's enjoying his racing so leave him.The Italians should still be thanking him for taking that pile of and turning it into a Grand Prix winner instead of pouring scorn on him.Might motivate him more to rub their noses in it.....

Wait.. Are the Italians calling Schumi arrogant because he accepted an offer to get back into an F1 car from Mercedes when there was no offer on the table from Ferrari? Stupid Italians. Schumi would have jumped at the chance of driving a Ferrari but the only thing they could offer was in place of an injured Felipe Massa last year.

For the record, Schumacher was NOT "outpaced all weekend" by Rosberg. His fastest race lap was better than Rosberg's.

Your memory is very short, can you recall all the bad luck and car trouble MS had in 2006 as well as his final race in Brasil, the way he cut through the field from behind twice. Want to see FA achieve that. I agree with all 4 other contributors. Go MS and for that matter my other drives Massa.

As long as the 'men in suits' dictate the regs therer is no room for any flair or independent thinking. They (regs) ensure that a car's design is plotted out before the season starts, e-mailed to each team and all they have to do is put together the graphics on each car. You will never achieve exciting racing if you don't allow creativity. Whatever, Schumi is still the business and always will be.

@Ollie: He's got something to prove alright, Alonso handed it to him for 2 seasons in succession before he "retired".

How can anybody rate Schumacher or any other driver after this crappy race. METALHead sums it up nicely!

Italians are generally hot-headed and not known for being circumspect. Why they go after Schumi, nobody knows. What about Webber with is big mouth and criticism of Schumi? What about Button who came in behind Schumi, being world champion and all? Where was Barrichello? And so on, and so on. Lots of poor performances but in my opinion a well-deserved and worked 6th place for Schumi. On return to F1 and at the age of 41 he still was only beaten by five other drivers. If that is what he can in his first race back can you imagine what is waiting for us later in the season?

Why are people so mean about Schumi - is it jealousy!!!!! I am happy he back in F1 he has nothing to prove and as long as he is enjoying himself that's fine by me. I want to see other drivers do as well with 3years not racing and having a new car & team. Go Schumi.

He is the worlds best driver and 7 times world champ, he can be arrogant if he wants, get over it.
