Monza GP - sixth win for Vettel

MONZA, Italy - All eyes were on Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton when the 2013 Italian F1 GP howled off the grid at Monza on Sunday after he fluffed qualifying to start a lowly 12th on the grid. Would he fight back to the front of the pack?

The first three places, in order, were taken by Sebastian Vettel, Mark Webber - both Red Bull - and, surprisingly, Sauber's Nico Hulkenberg, with Ferrari's Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso fifth and sixth... time would tell how long things would stay that way.

Full results and points at end of story

As the lights changed on the world's fastest Grand Prix circuit Vettel held the lead with Massa up to second immediately, followed by Webber with Hamilton already up to 10th and Paul di Resta out already after early contact and heavy frontal damage.Hulkenberg is down to fifth.

It was Vettel's sixth win in Italy.

LAP 9

By lap nine the leading order was Vettel, Alonso, Mass and Webber with Huldenberg fifth and Hamilton 11th behind Jenson Button and the race seeming to settle down.

Vettel was still dominant by lap 11, 5.5sec ahead of Alonso, with Button and Hamilton still  line astern in 10th and 11th and telemetry reporting Hamilton with a slow puncture on one of his 'hard' tyres. Will he make the pits? He's having radio trouble and earlier could not be heard by his pit - which was was awaiting his arrival and had been for more than two minutes and the race on lap 13.

He finally saw a pit board and came in, returning to the race 19th on fresh rubber, moving quickly up to 16th and still out of radio contact. Lap 39 and he's in, coming out behind Raikkonen and back down to 14th.

LAP 21

Vettel is still leading, 5.8sec ahead of Alonso, followed still by Massa, Webber, Hulkenberg, Rosberg, Ricciardo and Perez. Hamilton is up another place to 15th with pit stops starting for most drivers. On lap 24 Vettel comes in, with Webber following and the two returning to the race fifth and ninth as Hamilton record the race's fastest lap at 1min28.0 and Alonso leading but about to pit.

Lap 30, and Alonso's brief lead is over as Vettel comes back and the order now Vettel, Alonso, Webber, Massa, Raikkonen, Hulkenberg and, in 7th, Hamilton but 17sec off the lead but will he need another pit stop after his unscheduled tyre change early in the race? He's was still posting fastest laps by lap 38 and out of radio contact - passing the pits despite a 'box' call.

Lap 39 and he was in for tyres, and back out behind Kimi Raikkonen in 14th with the front four back to Vettel, Alonso, Webber and Massa who is 15sec back from the leader.

LAP 45

The race focus, given the leaders are now clear to the finish, remains on Hamilton and his battle with Raikkonen and, up front, between Alonso and Webber in second and third though there's nearly a second between them. Hamilton finally made it through on lap 49 after some nail-bitingly close calls and got up behind the two McLarens, his aim to get into the points.

Three to go and Hamilton soars past Jenson Button to make ninth - with little resistance from Button and Hamilton on full kers.

Last laps and Hamilton does a 25.8 fastest lap and heading for eighth... or even seventh.

And it's the last lap with the final order Vettel, Alonso, Webber, Massa, Hulkenberg, Rosberg, Ricciardo, Grosjean, Hamilton and 10th Button.
