Mercedes has targeted former Ferrari technical director Aldo Costa whom, it has emerged, has left Ferrari completely but is on what is euphemistically known as "gardening leave" until the end 2011.
The Italian magazine Autosprint reported that Mercedes, headed by former Ferrari technical director Ross Brawn, wanted Costa.
RECRUITMENT DRIVE
It was reported that Mercedes was on a recruitment drive to boost its staff numbers to match those of teams such as Red Bull, McLaren and Ferrari.
Reports further said Brawn told Daimler chairman Dieter Zetsche that Mercedes' struggles through 2010 and 2011 were partly because of the team's small size.
"So he (Brawn) received the go-ahead for the recruitment campaign," the report said.
