ISTANBUL, Turkey - Two-times champion Fernando Alonso is confident he can reach the podium for Ferrari at today's 2011 Turkish Formula 1 GP after qualifying fifth - for the fourth time this season.
The 29-year-old Spaniard said he was encouraged by the performance of his revamped car.
"It was OK but I'm still far from pole - eight-tenths of a second -- but then in China we were 1.4sec off so we've made a step forward with with new components yet we need to keep working. I think we've maximised the potential again - but we'll see what happens (in the race).
"In Malaysia we were very close until we touched with Lewis (Hamilton) and damaged the front wing and in China Felipe (Massa) was very close - I hope in Turkey we can do it."
Brazilian team mate Massa qualified 10th without running in 'top 10' final qualifying session.
