As a result the popular street cars drag race meeting on May 25 has been cancelled, while the May 31 race meeting has been moved to June 7.
Club vice chairman Adrian Pheiffer told Wheels24 most of the expense was because the back straight has to be resurfaced to get rid of a series of bumps caused by the roots of the giant blue gum trees that line the circuit there.
"These trees were planted in the early 'Fifties when the track was built, and their roots have become very invasive,"he said.
"As a result they will be extensively trimmed back, and at the same time trenches have to be dug to chop off those roots which are causing the surface bumps before the track can be resurfaced.
Mile oval
"We are also using the opportunity to put in a link between Shell Corner and the old Hoalshoek to make an effective 1 mile (1.6 km) oval which can then be used for short circuit motor cycle racing and club racing.
"This means we will be able to have more than one type of racing at the same time - short circuit racing, and drags, plus motocross and karting, thus catering for a lot more interests at the same time."
Adrian said there would also be work done to give the drag racers a tyre burnout section, as well as to improve the entrance to the circuit.
"This also dates back to the 'Fifties, and is definitely showing its age.
"We want to brighten it up and make it more inviting - who knows, we might even plant some flowers," he quipped.
The work is expected to take between two and three weeks.
