08 Apr 17:14 Vettel leads the race!
08 Apr 17:13 Lights out in Bahrain!!!
FINISH That's that from us. Thank you for your company today and do join us again next week for the Chinese GP.
FINISH That was brilliant. Congratulations to Vettel, who won the race and, especially Gasly, who secured his best finish. Kudos to Ericsson as well.
FINISH Vetel is shouting! Gasly is nearly crying. Well done to both.
FINISH Alonso, Vandoorne, Ericsson and Ocon are the final drivers in the points. Well done Ericsson as well as he picks up points for the first time in more than a year. It's his first points in 50 races.
FINISH Take a bow Gasly as he claims his best-ever finish with a P4. He is just ahead of Magnussen and Hulkenberg.
FINISH Bottas takes P2 and Hamilton takes the final podium position.
FINISH Vettel has done it! He has held off Bottas to win the Bahrain Grand Prix in his 200th GP.
Lap 57 Bottas will have one more go in a DRS zone. He doesn't look close enough. DRS is open, but he is not close enough again. Looks like Vettel has held on for the win here.
Lap 57 We are on the last lap. Can Vettel hold on?
Lap 57 We start the final lap and Bottas is right on Vettel's rear at Turn 1. Not close enough and Vettel holds on.
Lap 56 Niki Lauda is looking nervous in the Merc garage.
Lap 56 Bottas was not close enough on the previous DRS zone. He is running out of chances.
Lap 55 Okay it is now less than one second and we are closing in on another DRS zone.
Lap 55 He's not quite yet in the DRS zone, but he is very close.
Lap 54 Big lock-up from Bottas and that will have cost him a bit, but he is still 1.4s behind Vettel.
Lap 54 Alonso has caught up with Hulkenberg and he is within DRS range.
Lap 54 Back to the front and Vettel is only 1.9s ahead of Bottas with Hamilton another 11s adrift.
Lap 53 Vandoorne has managed to get ahead of Ericsson, but he is holding off Sainz for now. He should be good for two points.
Lap 52 Bottas is told that there are no more traffic ahead of him and he needs to push in the final five laps.
Lap 52 Vettel's tyres are gone as he is struggling. Bottas is a full second faster than him while Hamilton is 1.5s faster than the Ferrari.
Lap 52 Now Hamilton is having a little moan about blue flags. The gap at the front between Vettel and Bottas is 3.5s.
Lap 51 Ericsson is in P8, but he has Vandoorne in his rear mirrors. Will the Swede hold on for a point or two?
Lap 50 Vettel still hasn't lapped Alonso and Bottas is upping the ante. The Finn is doing 1:34.5s while Vettel is doing 1:35.3.
Lap 49 Hamilton is told 'Lewis just keep your head, Vettel is going to fall off that cliff'. We have less than 10 laps to go.
Lap 49 Bottas has managed to reduce Vettel's lead to 5.6s while Hamilton is another 12s adrift in third place.
Lap 48 Vettel is struggling to lap Alonso and he calls for blue flags. Bit of a strange one as he is quite far behind Alonso at the moment.
Lap 47 Grosjean finally pits, but again no repair work to that damage bargeboard/floor. It was a slow stop, but he is out.
Lap 47 Hamilton once again asks about the target and again he is told it is 1:34.0. He is currently doing 1:37. due to traffic.
Lap 46 Hamilton has caught up with the Perez/Grosjean scrap, but there is a big lock up from the Mercedes man. No damage done.
Lap 46 Vettel's lead has been reduced to six seconds, but he had a bit of traffic. Ocon is wheel-to-wheel with Grosjean and he gets ahead of the Haas just before Turn 4.
Lap 46 Vettel is about to lap Ericsson and Alonso. Hamilton asks the team to let him know if he is on target. He is.
Lap 45 Ericsson and Alonso battle over P7. The Sauber man tries to fend off the Spaniard, but his tyres are much, much older than that of the McLaren and he loses out.
Lap 44 Bits and pieces are coming off Grosjean's car. He might get a black flag soon if Haas don't pit him soon.
Lap 44 Big lock-up from Bottas, who is eight seconds off Vettel's pace.
Lap 43 Hamilton is told that Vettel might not stop. However, there might be a telemetry issue. Hulkenberg has finally managed to pass Ericsson.
Lap 43 Ericsson is still P6 and he is still holding up Hulkenberg.
Lap 42 Ferrari have confirmed that their mechanic has been taken to the hospital for treatment.
Lap 42 Hamilton is lapping one second faster than Bottas. He is told to target low 34s. He is 10s adrift of his team-mate, who is seven seconds adrift of Vettel.
Lap 41 Gasly is still holding onto P4, but Magnussen is only two seconds adrift.
Lap 40 The Red Bull drivers have their backpacks on and they are outta here.
Lap 39 Vettel has been told that they are on Plan B and Raikkonen has retired.
Lap 39 The stewards have confirmed that they will look at Raikkonen's unsafe release after the race.
Lap 39 Vettel leads Bottas by six seconds with Hamilton another 19s adrift in third place.
Lap 38 This is disastrous for Ferrari as it means Vettel's pit stop is now being delayed as well.
Lap 37 So the Ferrari mechanics failed to take off the rear left tyre and he was sent on his way with three fresh rubbers and one old tyre.
Lap 37 The Ferrari mechanic is still receiving treatment.
Lap 37 Bit of chaos in the pits as Ocon dived into the pits and the Force India garage is close to the Ferrari one.
Lap 37 Raikkonen has stopped his car and he is climbing out. Looks like the mechanic will need some treatment.
Lap 36 The Ferrari mechanics are out again and it's for Raikkonen. Oh dear! A problem for Raikkone. Unsafe release a mechanic has been hit.
Lap 36 Gasly has come out ahead of Magnussen! That is brilliant stuff from the Toro Rosso man.
Lap 36 Gasly pits from fifth place. He is expected to come out behind Magnussen and Alonso.
Lap 35 Vettel has traffic ahead of him. Hamilton asks the team 'with the gap as it is, he'd come out behind me, right?'. He is told yes.
Lap 34 Back to the front and Vettel leads Bottas by four seconds with Raikkonen another 1.8s adrift in second place. Hamilton is 20s behind race leader Vettel.
Lap 33 Magnussen has a look at Ocon and he cannot get the job done at the final corner, but he makes it stick in the DRS zone on the home straight.
Lap 32 Magnussen's reply is 'well done guys, f*** it'
Lap 31 Grosjean finally ducks into the pits so that frees Magnussen.
Lap 31 Magnussen asks the team 'what the f*** is he doing' as Grosjean is holding up his Haas team-mate.
Lap 31 There is something flapping from Grosjean's Haas. Looks like a problem with the bargeboard/floor. Worrying faces in the Haas garage.
Lap 30 Vandoorne pits from P9. And now it's Perez v Ericsson on the home straight for P11 and the Sauber man makes it stick.
Lap 30 Magnussen takes the inside line at Turn 11 and he moves past Perez to move into P11. Ericsson is now lining up the Force India as well.
Lap 29 Hamilton is told that Vettel is a few seconds outside their pit window target, but 'remember we are on Plan A'.
Lap 28 This has been an impressive drive from Gasly so far. He is eight seconds ahead of Magnussen, who is in for his second stop.
Lap 27 In case you were wondering about the rest of the top 10, Gasly is best of the rest and he is followed by Magnussen, Hulkenberg, Alonso, Vandoorne and Ocon.
Lap 27 Hamilton ducks into the pits for the medium tyres. We still have 30 laps to go. He rejoins in P4.
Lap 26 The Mercedes pit crew has the medium tyres out for Hamilton.
Lap 26 Job done for Hamilton though as he did hold up Vettel for a few seconds. The Merc crew is also out.
Lap 26 There is nothing that Hamilton can do as Vettel blasts past him in the DRS zone on the main straight.
Lap 25 Hamilton fends off Vettel at Turn 11. The Merc driver stays ahead for a couple of corners.
Lap 25 Vettel is within DRS range of Hamilton. Bottas has told 'remember we are on Plan B'.
Lap 25 Vettel is catching Hamilton as he is just 1.3s behind the Mercedes driver.
Lap 24 Hulkenberg has lined up Ericsson in P7, but there is no overtaking move as the Sauber driver ducks into the pits.
Lap 24 Okay so it is Hamilton from Vettel, Bottas, Raikkonen, Gasly, Magnussen, Ericsson, Hulkenberg, Alonso and Vandoorne. Hamilton and Ericsson are yet to stop.
Lap 24 Magnussen is up to P6 as he overtakes Ericsson, who is yet to make a pit stop.
Lap 24 Vettel is chipping away at Hamilton's lead. The Mercedes man is yet to stop, remember. The Ferrari driver is 3.4s behind Hamilton. New fastest lap from Bottas with a 1:33.740.
Lap 23 Okay Bottas is now going purple in Sector 1 so it's all happening on these different strategies.
Lap 22 Hamilton currently leads Vettel by 5.1s. Raikkonen is next to produce a fastest lap with a 1:34.411. He is just 1.6s behind Bottas.
Lap 21 So it's different strategies for the top four. The two Ferraris are on the soft tyres, Bottas is on the medium and Hamilton is yet to stop. It looks like Hamilton will do a one-stopper.
Lap 21 That Vettel lap was 1:34.696.
Lap 21 Bottas takes on the medium tyres and he rejoins behind Vettel, who has set the fastest lap time, and ahead of Raikkonen.
Lap 21 Okay the Mercedes pit crew is out again and it looks like it will be for Bottas. Here comes the Finn.
Lap 20 The Ferrari mechanics are out again and this time its for Raikkonen who will also take on a set of soft tyres. So Bottas leads from Hamilton, Vettel and Raikkonen.
Lap 20 Hamilton is told that they are sticking to 'Plan A'. 'Plan A' looks to be a one-stopper at the moment.
Lap 20 Vettel rejoins behind Hamilton after taking on the soft tyres. Looked like a bit of a bluff from the Merc mechanics as they came out while Vettel was pitting.
Lap 19 Bottas is the fastest man on the track as he has reduced Vettel's lead to 2.2s. The Ferrari mechanics are out and it's for Vettel.
Lap 18 The two Mercedes drivers are definitely faster than the two Ferraris. Maybe Vettel and Raikkonen's tyres are starting to wear off. Hamilton is now 5.8s off Raikkonen.
Lap 18 Sirotkin is holding up Hulkenberg and Alonso, but the Renault man makes light work of the Williams driver. Alonso is next to have a go and he gets past without any problems.
Lap 17 Hamilton is still lapping a bit quicker than the two drivers ahead of him. Vettel's lead over him is down to 13.7s.
Lap 16 Gasly and Hulkenberg are both in the pits now. Will Hulkenberg exit ahead of Alonso? The answer to that is yes.
Lap 15 Vettel still leads Bottas by under three seconds while Hamilton is about 14s adrift.
Lap 14 Alonso is next to pit and he puts on the medium tyres. Maybe a one-stopper for Alonso?
Lap 13 Perez and Hartley are under investigation for failure to maintain order under the formation lap.
Lap 13 Magnussen is the first of the top 10 drivers to pit. We can confirm that Magnussen is away without any problems this time around.
Lap 13 Yet more info for Alonso as the McLaren pit wall has told him that Gasly might have a brake problem. The Toro Rosso man is P5 while Alonso is P8.
Lap 12 They've started to pack up in the Red Bull garage and we'll see them in China. Ricciardo simply lost power while Verstappen picked up a puncture when he made contact with Hamilton.
Lap 11 Change of front wing for Stroll while he was in the pits so he will come out at the back.
Lap 11 Big lock-ups from Hulkenberg and Alonso as they try to keep pace with Magnussen. Vandoorne, Stroll and Perez are the first drivers to pit.
Lap 10 Vettel leads Bottas by 2.8s with Raikkonen a full six seconds behind his Ferrari team-mate. Hamilton is 14 seconds off the lead.
Lap 10 Hartley has received a 10-second time penalty for causing a collision. This is with regards to the incident with Perez.
Lap 9 The incident between Hulkenberg and Magnussen has also been noted and no further action will be taken.
Lap 9 The incident between Hamilton and Verstappen has been 'noted by the stewards, but no further action will be taken'.
Lap 8 Alonso is told that 'apparently Hulkenberg is struggling with his battery'. No reply from the Spaniard. he is less than one second adrift of the Renault man.
Lap 8 Hamilton is up to P4 as he breezes past Gasly on the main straight.
Lap 8 The Perez and Hartley incident at the start is being investigated by the race stewards.
Lap 7 Just back to that Hamilton triple swoop, it was pretty spectacular as he went on the inside of Hulkenberg, Alonso and Ocon to move up to P6.
Lap 7 Hamilton is only one second behind Gasly while he 13.6s adrift of race leader Vettel.
Lap 6 At the front Vettel leads Bottas by 2.3s while Raikkonen is another four seconds adrift.
Lap 6 So that's both Red Bull cars out of the race. Hamilton has Magnussen in his sights and Hamilton is now up to P5 as he eases past the Haas of the Dane.
Lap 5 Verstappen has stopped and we have yellow flags in Sector 3.
Lap 5 One moment Ocon was fighting off Hulkenberg and the next moment he is down in P9 as Hamilton, Hulkenberg and Alonso moved past him.
Lap 5 It is all happening as Hamilton has jumped to P6 on the back of a mad scramble involving Hulkenberg, Alonso, Ocon.
Lap 5 The race restarts, but there is contact between Gasly and Magnussen. They are both going and now Hulkenberg goes on the outside of Ocon to go up to P6.
Lap 4 Okay the Virtual Safety Car is coming in at the end of the lap.
Lap 4 Perez also has problems with his car after the opening lap as he went off the track.
Lap 3 Verstappen has reached the pit lane while Ricciardo is leaving the track on the back of a motorbike. Verstappen's car might have picked up damage to the floor. He changes to the supersoft tyres and rejoins the track.
Lap 3 The Virtual Safety Car has been deployed so Verstappen should be able to make his car back. Verstappen made contact with Hamilton's front right.
Lap 3 Double disaster for Red Bull as it was Ricciardo who has stopped. Verstappen is still tyring to make his way back to the pits.
Lap 2 Verstappen is losing places and he is trying to nurse his car back to the pits. He has now stopped. Yellow flags.
Lap 2 It's Hamilton v Verstappen. They make contact at Turn 2, but Verstappen has a puncture after the contact.
Lap 1 It's Vettel from Bottas, Raikkonen, Ricciardo, Gasly, Magnussen. Hamilton has actually dropped a place as Alonso is ahead of him.
Lap 1 Solid starts from Gasly and Magnussen, but Perez went backwards.
Lap 1 It's lights out at Bahrain and Vettel is away without problems. Bottas ducks past Raikkonen and he is P2. A Haas has gone off, it's Magussen.
18:11 The top eight drivers are on the supersoft tyres while Hamilton in P9 is on the softs. Verstappen in P15 is really the man to watch as he is also on the softs, but he has several new sets of tyres at his disposal.
18:10 Vettel leads the pack away on the formation lap. They are all away without any problems.
18:06 We have two DRS zones today and we traditionally have plenty of overtaking moves in this race.
18:04 Time for a final cuppa before the race gets underway.
18:02 Plenty of Guy Ritchie jokes going about as he is at the track today. Frankie Dettori is also in attendance and naturally he is in the Ferrari garage.
17:58 The air temperature is currently 28 degrees Celsius and the track is 33, but the sun is going down as we speak. Well, as I type that.
17:54 Alonso says top 10/points is still the target for McLaren despite yesterday's poor qualifying session.
17:50 Here's another stat for you, no driver has won the Bahrain Grand Prix starting from outside the top four. So Hamilton really has his work cut out.
17:46 As usual, it's non-stop entertainment in Bahrain. We have jumbo jets flying over and the band has just arrived on the track, preparing for the national anthem.
17:43 Most of the front-runners are expected to have two-stop strategies, but the one-stopper is a possibility.
17:40 And there you go! The pit lane is now open and they are all rolling out of the pits now.
17:36 Interesting fact, Hamilton has never won a race starting outside the top six.
17:32 And if you were expecting us to say the pit lane is now open, then you will have to wait another eight minutes. In case you had forgotten the race now starts 10 after the hour so the pit lane only opens 17:40.
17:30 We haven't mentioned Williams yet. They had a shocker in qualifying as Lance Stroll will start at the back of the grid and his team-mate Sergey Sirotkin didn't fare too much better as he is P18.
17:25 Staying with Haas, Steiner feels they have what it takes to continue where they left off last week, well before they bombed out in the pit stops. Magnussen starts P6 and Grosjean is P16.
17:23 As for Haas' pit stop woes in Australia, Guenther Steiner admits a lack of practice cost them in Melbourne. They have switched personal as the 'confidence was a bit low' after the shocker in Australia.
17:19 Ferrari have looked good all weekend, but Vettel feels it will be 'very tight between the top three teams'.
17:17 Verstappen though is confident that he has a good car to produce some overtaking moves during the race. Watch out Stoffel!
17:13 McLaren were slightly disappointing as Fernando Alonso and Stoffel Vandoorne will start P13 and P14. If you are wondering about Max Verstappen, he is P15 after his car suffered a 150 horsepower surge during Q1.
17:10 Nico Hulkenberg and Esteban Ocon are seventh and eight with Hamilton and Carlos Sainz completing the top 10.
17:07 Behind the two Ferraris, you have Valterri Bottas and Daniel Ricciardo. Lewis Hamilton was fourth quickest, but he will start P9 due to a gearbox change penalty. Excellent stuff from Pierre Gasly and Kevin Magnussen as the Toro Rosso and Haas are on the third row of the grid.
17:05 Before we return to today's grid, we just like to tell you that the sun is starting to set over the Bahrain International Circuit. It makes for spectacular viewing.
17:02 Today's race is only the second of the 2018 season and just to refresh your memory, Sebastian Vettel won the opener in Australia and things are looking good for him this weekend as well as he will start on pole with his Ferrari team-mate Kimi Raikkonen next to him.
17:00 Greetings and welcome to our live commentary of the 2018 Bahrain Grand Prix at Sakhir.
16:00 There's the checkered flag! It's Raikkonen on top heading into qualifying, which begins at 1800 local time. Join us again then.
15:57 Two minutes left in the session and Ricciardo moves up to P3, also five tenths off Raikkonen's best.
15:56 Verstappen narrows the gap to Raikkonen to half a second...then almost collides with him at the end of the pit-lane straight. That was a close one!
15:54 Vettel reporting that something "quite bad" happened to his car at Turn 11 and 12. He was told to box immediately and is unable to complete a proper qualifying sim run.
15:50 Hamilton gearing up for another hot lap and he is still not able to make any real impression. He's down three tenths in the first sector and loses another half a second in the middle sector. He also finds no improvement in the final sector.
15:47 Nothing to write home about with Hamilton's latest lap. He was down pretty quickly on Raikkonen's best and topped it off by running wide at the final corner. He improves, but is eight tenths behind the Ferrari.
15:46 With a new set of supersofts strapped on, Raikkonen posts a 1:29.868 to give the other leading contenders something to aim at.
15:40 Sainz climbs up to P9 in the Renault as we head inside the final 20 minutes of the session. We'll be seeing some qualifying sim programmes very soon.
15:38 Vettel goes quickest of all in the first sector and recovers well in the third sector to leap to P1 on the leaderboard. He shaves Bottas' best by 0.062s.
15:35 Verstappen shoots up to P2 to split the two Mercedes cars. Vettel is back out again after that pesky loose sidepod part was replaced.
15:33 Hartley improves on his best FP2 time and is currently nestled in P8. Team-mate Gasly is also in the top 10.
15:26 Grosjean runs wide at Turn 14 to abort his latest lap. He's currently in the top 10 though. Seven drivers yet to post a time as we approach the half-way point.
15:22 Bottas and Hamilton are setting the very early pace. Both are straight into the 1:30s and just a tenth separates them.
15:20 A minor concern for Vettel as a piece of his sidepod has come loose and is flapping around. He's straight back into the garage.
15:19 As Raikkonen locks up at Turn 10, it's Sainz with the first time lap on the board - a 1:33.893.
15:16 Signs of life out on track again. Vettel and Raikkonen among those on his out-lap...
15:13 We are still awaiting our first timed lap. Nobody in any real rush to begin their programmes.
15:08 The usual practice starts and installation laps to begin with. No suggestion of any Verstappen-like drama we had yesterday.
15:00 Green light! First out of the blocks is Sebastian Vettel. Ericsson, Alonso, Vandoorne and Magnussen are all in pursuit.
14:58 All ready to go...
14:45 There was some overnight rain in the desert but it is hot and humid again now with a few clouds dotted around. 15 minutes until our first green light of the day.
14:36 In case you missed it, news broke late last night that Lewis Hamilton has been hit with a five-place grid penalty for Sunday's race because of a gearbox change. The highest he can start on the grid is P6. No luck so far this season!
14:30 Hello and welcome to qualifying day in Bahrain. But before we find out who will be on pole, teams have one final hour to fine-tune their cars in FP3. The session gets underway in 30 minutes. All times are local.
7:30 The chequered flag falls in Bahrain and that's it for FP2 which ends with Raikkonen leading a Ferrari 1-2 ahead of Bottas. So that's it for tonight, join us tomorrow for third practice and qualifying. Cheers.
7:29 Bottas has called it quits on his night. He pulls into the pits, takes part in a quick pit stop practice, and parks it.
7:28 Two minutes remaining...
7:25 Ouch, not a great question from Leclerc who is on lap 33 and asks Sauber: "Are you sure the tyres are not going to explode?"
7:20 It's been a good night for McLaren with both Alonso and Vandoorne inside the top ten.
7:17 Yip, loose front right wheel.
7:16 Problems for Raikkonen as he pulls off the track, parking his SF71H. He had just pitted for a change of tyres from the supersofts to used softs and it looks like he may have a loose wheel.
7:15 Finally Ocon gets a new set of supersoft tyres bolted onto his Force India and leaves the pits with a quick pitstop practice to change tyres.
7:14 Vettel started with a 1:34.7 and is now doing 1:36.3 20 laps into his soft tyre race sim.
7:12 Interestingly Sirotkin and Hartley are both lapping on the medium Pirellis, the least favoured tyre here in Bahrain.
7:07 Raikkonen is up to 21st lap on the supersoft tyres.
7:04 At the bottom of the timesheets it hasn't been a great session for Leclerc, Stroll, Sirotkin, Ericsson and Hartley. If this was qualifying, they'd be out in the first round.
7:01 Hulkenberg isn't happy and reports he wants to boost his power with DRS but he's told not to use it.
6:58 Vettel is showing really good pace on his soft tyres, definitely faster than the Mercedes drivers but they're on the supersofts which aren't proving to be the optimum tyre.
6:57 Mercedes, though, have Bottas and Hamilton running the supersofts while Red Bull have also split their drivers.
6:54 Back to race set-up and Ferrari have opted to split strategies with Raikkonen running the supersofts and Vettel the yellow soft tyres.
6:49 After their epic pace in Australia, Haas are down in 11th and 15th places with Grosjean ahead of Magnussen.
6:45 Only Verstappen and Ocon have yet to complete their supersoft tyre runs... both are out on track but still on the soft tyres.
6:38 Bottas faces a possible meeting with the stewards are blocking Ricciardo. The Aussie has some choice words for the Mercedes man.
6:37 Here comes Vettel...purple in the middle sector on his way to a 1:30.041. That leaves him P2, some 0.011s down on Raikkonen's best.
6:36 Magnussen is now the traffic for Hamilton and the Brit only improves to fourth, 0.655s down.
6:35 Vettel, who was fastest on the soft tyres, leaves the pits with a new set of supersofts on his car. Can he improve his time?
6:34 A bit of traffic for Hamilton forces the Mercedes driver to back off in the second sector. Gasly and Hulkenberg were the two drivers ahead of him.
6:33 Surprisingly Bottas is down on Vettel's first sector time on his supersoft tyres, and again sector two. He stays third fastest - was 0.630s on the softs but drops that to 0.563s down.
6:30 Bottas, Leclerc, Hulkenberg and Hartley hit the track with new supersoft tyres bolted onto their cars. And here comes Hamilton.
6:29 Raikkonen is up in both the first and second sector, but not in the third, and it is a 1:29.817 for the Finn.
6:26 Verstappen pits and Raikkonen is the first man out on the supersoft tyres.
6:24 Verstappen is still out there lapping on his soft tyres as he makes up for lost time. He's up to lap number 9. Vettel and Sainz are the only two other drivers out on track.
6:21 Completing the top ten are: Verstappen, Vandoorne, Gasly, Fernando Alonso and Sainz.
6:20 Changes at the top with Vettel quickest with a 1:30.041. Bottas is second, Raikkonen third, Ricciardo fourth and Hamilton fifth. The Brit's time was set on the medium tyres.
6:17 Sauber are clearing a bit of gravel from Ericsson's car but it looks like he escaped from the dirt without damage.
6:16 Ericsson is back in the pits with his Sauber getting the once over to check for damage.
6:15 Raikkonen leads ahead of a Red Bull 2-3 with Ricciardo 0.06s down and Verstappen, nope it is not Stoffel Vandoorne who is P3, 1.2s off the pace. Verstappen is fourth.
6:12 Yellow flags as Ericsson gets it wrong and puts his Sauber in the kitty litter. He dropped it on the kerb, putting in too much throttle, and spun off.
6:10 Good news for Verstappen fans as the Dutchman takes to the circuit in his, hopefully, working RB14.
6:08 Leclerc was briefly P1, a first for the Sauber rookie, but now it is Raikkonen with a 1:30.6. The Ferrari driver is running used soft tyres.
6:07 Raikkonen asks for a wind check from Ferrari. This can be a big problem in Bahrain as it blows sand onto the track.
6:06 Perez is the only Force India driver running the team's new front wing with Ocon, who is behind his team-mate in the standings but both on 0 points, using the old Aussie spec.
6:05 A 1:33.3 for Magnussen on the soft tyres while Leclerc, Stroll, Perez, Brendon Hartley, Sergey Sirotkin and Raikkonen join the action.
6:03 The lights around the circuit are providing the only lightening and, as someone said prior to the weekend, it makes for F1's most photogenic grand prix.
6:00 Green light, and a whole lot of other lights, and we're go with Kevin Magnussen heading out straight away. Romain Grosjean follows him out.
5:53 Track temperature is down to 32'C and cloud cover is building over the Bahrain International circuit.
5:46 The only other incidents of note were spins from Lance Stroll and Charles Leclerc, the latter finishing an unexpected P12. It was an awful start to the weekend for Force India with Sergio Perez and Esteban Ocon P18 and 19 ie slowest of all those who set lap times.
5:41 But while Ricciardo had a great start to the Bahrain weekend, the same cannot be said of Max Verstappen. His RB14 suffered an electrical problem, leaving him time-less and smarting.
5:34 The top ten from this afternoon's session... 1 Daniel Ricciardo Red Bull 1:31.060; 2 Valtteri Bottas Mercedes 1:31.364 0.304; 3 Kimi Raikkonen Ferrari 1:31.458 0.398 4 Sebastian Vettel Ferrari 1:31.470 0.41; 5 Lewis Hamilton Mercedes 1:32.272 1.212; 6 Romain Grosjean Haas 1:32.516 1.456; 7 Pierre Gasly Toro Rosso 1:32.779 1.719; 8 Carlos Sainz Renault 1:32.885 1.825; 9 Kevin Magnussen Haas 1:32.971 1.911; 10 Nico Hulkenberg Renault 1:33.104 2.044.
5:30 Welcome back to the Sakhir circuit for Friday's second practice. Beginning at 6pm local time, the sun will set over the track during this 90 minute session, changing the track conditions dramatically. It remains to be seen whether Daniel Ricciardo, P1 in FP1, can maintain his advantage.
15:30 Checkered flag! So it's Ricciardo and Red Bull setting the early pace, but it's not been all plain sailing for them. Max Verstappen suffered an on-track stoppage within the first five minutes of the session and was not seen again. Bottas, Raikkonen, Vettel and Hamilton round off the top five. See you again at 1800 local time for FP2.
15:25 Higher fuel runs appear to be the final focus of FP1. Just scanning the timesheet, it looks like Force India have plenty of work ahead of them again this weekend with Perez and Ocon slowest of everyone so far.
15:20 Both Mercedes cars are back out on track for the final 10 minutes. They are both back on the slower soft tyres, so Ricciardo's place in P1 looks pretty safe.
15:15 Hello Danny Ric! He goes quickest of all with a 1:31.060 - three tenths quicker than Bottas. 15 minutes remaining.
15:09 Now let's see what Vettel has up his sleeve... a 1:31:470 to put him P3. He was quickest of everyone in the first sector but lost a little bit of time through the second and third sectors.
15:06 Decent lap from Raikkonen as we head toward the final 20 minutes. He is within a tenth of Bottas to go P2. Hamilton drops to P3 and nine tenths off the pace.
15:04 Out of nowhere, Bottas finds nearly a second on Hamilton and sets the new benchmark: a 1:31.364.
14:58 Hamilton was on course once again to take top spot but a lock-up put a stop to that.
14:53 We're starting to see the supersofts get their first outing of the afternoon, hence the reason why Romain Grosjean has overtaken Hamilton at the top of the standings. Magnussen is in P3.
14:51 And Alonso shoots all the way up to P3, leapfrogging team-mate Vandoorne in the process. Nicely done from the Spaniard.
14:49 A stray bollard makes an attempt for freedom but a steward is able to recover it. Alonso, currently running just outside the top 10, is then able to head back out on track.
14:42 A lull in proceedings now as drivers hand back their first set of tyres at the half-way point of the session.
14:40 "The car is absolute mess," reports Carlos Sainz who is the penultimate driver to put a timed lap on the board. He's straight back into the pits. Verstappen still firmly in the garage after his early stoppage.
14:38 Hamilton was on course for a new fastest lap on soft tyres, but wheel spin in the middle sector sees him fall short.
14:36 Haas have been practicing their pit stops following their disastrous double DNF in Australia. Another messy stop for Grosjean but Magnussen's did go smoothly.
14:32 Current top 10 as we head into the final hour: Hamilton, Bottas, Raikkonen, Vandoorne, Vettel, Grosjean, Ricciardo, Alonso, Gasly, Ocon.
14:30 As Leclerc does exactly the same thing, Hamilton goes top of the timesheet after finding nearly two tenths on Bottas.
14:29 Stroll comes to a stop at Turn 8, but manages to get going again. He lost all control on entry into the corner and spun out as a result.
14:26 Bottas is on the quicker soft tyres to start with, as opposed to mediums for Ferrari, and immediately sets a new benchmark: a 1:33.235.
14:23 Vettel is half a second off the early pace set by Raikkonen and nestles into P2.
14:21 A first showing from Ferrari and Raikkonen and it's straight up to the top with a 1:33.770.
14:19 Ricciardo has the medium tyres strapped on and takes half a second off Ocon to top the standings with a 1:34.333.
14:17 Perez now goes top with a 1:35.191. Ricciardo just 0.013s behind and Ocon improves on his time but drops to third. Sirotkin slots into P4 with his first timed lap.
14:14 Force India are the first to post timed laps. Ocon sets a 1:35.687, with Perez seven tenths behind.
14:10 Verstappen is helping push the car back into the pit lane. No yellows or red flags necessary, but not the start Red Bull wanted to their weekend and a worry for the Renault-powered cars out there.
14:05 Oh dear, oh dear. Verstappen has a problem and has lost power. He is trying to free-wheel the car as close to the pits as possible, but comes to a stop just before the entry.
14:00 Green light! Max Verstappen, Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc are amongst the first to emerge from the garage.
13:55 We're almost set for action in Bahrain. The pit lane will open in five minutes.
13:50 As for the teams out in front, it promises to be another intriguing weekend between Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull. Mercedes were the quickest qualifiers in Australia, Ferrari won the race and Red Bull set the fastest lap. The strong belief in the paddock is that Mercedes are the team to beat this weekend, but Ferrari won here last year and their car seemed to love the warmer conditions.
13:45 The likes of McLaren, Force India and Williams are all coming to Bahrain armed with upgrades as the midfield battle hots up. Yet it won't be until FP2, where conditions are much more representative of what is to come in Sunday's race, that we will see if they are any good or not.
13:40 On the issue of grid penalties, there are none to report on for this weekend's thus far. However, both Toro Rosso drivers, Brendon Hartley and Pierre Gasly, are onto their second MGU-H and turbocharger elements of the season already after Honda were forced into changes after Australia. Teams are only allowed three before penalties come into effect. Gasly also has a new ICE fitted.
13:35 Before attention turned toward FP1, Formula 1 owners Liberty and the FIA have revealed their latest blueprint for 2021. It is very similar to what they released back in November, with the key objective being to have engines that are 'cheaper, simpler, louder, have more power and reduce the necessity of grid penalties'.
13:30 Hello and welcome to Bahrain for the start of second grand prix weekend of the 2018 season. FP1 gets underway in 30 minutes. All times are local.
