Leaked: FIA Bahrain report

Cape Town - “Security is guaranteed”, “total calm and stability” are some of the reasons put forward by FIA vice-president Carlos Garcia to reinstate the Bahrain Grand Prix according to a leaked report.

The document details the FIA’s recent meeting with the President of the Bahrain Motor Federation Shaikh Abdulla bin Isa Al-Khalifa.

According to the report, from a tourism perspective “visitor figures have in fact increased when compared to previous years”.

Nada Ahmed Yaseen, a Unesco delegate at the FIA meeting, felt that international media have portrayed the situation in Bahrain “inaccurately.”

In the report Garcia outlines that the Bahrain Grand Prix should return to the 2011 Formula 1 calendar claiming there were no indications of any “problems” with the event’s return.

“No indication of any problems or reason why Bahrain’s F1 Grand Prix should not return to the 2011 Calendar,” stated Garcia in the report.

The FIA official outlined the reasons for the Bahrain Grand Prix return as follows:

- The announcement of the King of Bahrain yesterday (May 29, 2011) establishing a political dialogue and reconciliation process
- The State of Emergency lifted as of June 1, 2011
- Military forces have returned to barracks
- National police will carry on Security as normal
- Atmosphere of total calm and stability
- Election will take place of September 24th and are open to all political parties to participate
- Life Bahrain is completely normal again
- Security is guaranteed including readiness for unforeseen events both inside and outside the Circuit
- GP organization is 100% committed and ready

Global campaigning organisation Avaaz has called for the cancellation of the Bahrain Grand Prix and has slammed the FIA's decision to reinstate the event.

LEAKED: An excerpt from the leaked FIA report shows some of the reasons behind reinstating the Bahrain event.

Ricken Patel, executive director at Avaaz, says the FIA report is "irresponsible", claiming that human rights have been violated in Bahrain.

“Reading the FIA’s Bahrain report is like stepping into the Twilight Zone. While FIA’s sham report says that no human rights have been violated, at least 31 Bahrain citizens have been killed and hundreds more tortured and imprisoned. F1 based their decision to race in Bahrain on this dangerously irresponsible report, a decision now universally opposed by the F1 teams. F1 must pull out of Bahrain immediately or have their reputation forever tarnished.”

The Bahrain Grand Prix was cancelled earlier in 2011 due to political unrest, but has since been reinstated despite the decision receiving mixed reactions from teams and officials alike.
