Polish authorities have used a crash-test facility to re-create a horror crash that left a Renault F1 driver seriously injured.
Robert Kubica suffered severe injuried to his right leg and right arm during a minor Italian rally in February 2011. The Renault driver veered off the road and into a corrugated steel barrier which skewered his Skoda.
CRASH TEST
An almost identical Skoda Fabia was used for the recreation in Poland. The vehicle, using a catapult, is shot at the barrier at 110km/h to simulate Kubica's ill-fated rally drive.
After the initial tests, footage was to be compared to a crash test on a length of barrier that had been propertly installed.
The video shows that Kubica was extremely lucky during his Andora rally crash and that the structural improvements to his race car almost certainly saved his life.
Watch the crash-test footage below (sorry, the clip is in Polish).
