Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf said Renault is in "big" financial trouble and Prodrive chief David Richards expressed interest in buying into the team.
Reports added that Dutch entrepreneur Marcel Boekhoorn, who is GP2 driver Giedo van der Garde's father-in-law, was asked to support Richards' interest.
Jan Paul ten Hoopen, van der Garde's manager, said he heard about the Renault problem but did not know what to think of it.
"I think it is pretty much a mess within that team (Renault). Put it this way, it is clear in terms of Lotus-Renault that many things remain unclear," he told NUsport.
"Certainly if there is any more to it, we should see if there are any opportunities for Giedo."
Former BAR boss Richards was the team principal at Renault when the team was known as Benetton in the late 90s.
