Hamilton races in SA

In a nail-biting race over three laps at Kyalami's race track, former F1 champion Lewis Hamilton was narrowly beaten by Vodacom's Business Metro ethernet fibre network (Metro E) in race between man against data.

As part of the challenge, Hamilton raced a Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG around the 4.2km race track in Johannesburg against a data capsule of 5.4GB of data transmitted across the Metro E network from Midrand to Sandton.

On the third non-standing race lap, Hamilton's time of two minutes matched that of the data capsule; however with his first-lap time of 02:11 mins and a second lap of 02:09mins, Metro E managed to win the overall race on average lap times.

Ermano Quartero, managing executive of products and services at Vodacom Business, said the day was all about technology and speed.

"With Metro E, businesses have access to a super-fast, high capacity fibre connection, giving them greater control over what they send and how they connect and communicate,” says Quartero.

Hamilton said he enjoyed his time in South Africa and is eager to get back to racing at Kyalami.

“I love it in South Africa! I’ve received an incredible reception from its people – and I really didn’t have a full idea of the following I have here. It’s been a great experience and I really enjoyed racing on the Kyalami race track,” said Hamilton.
