Ferrari's new F1 car a bakkie?

Naming F1 cars is always rather boring.

Usually the chassis numbers are a simple continuation of project codes and as such there is little fun to be had during the pre-season, when the new cars are unveiled.

Trust F1’s most flamboyant team to add some humour to the season before it has even started.

Ferrari’s 2011 F1 car is due to be revealed on Friday and it will carry the F150 moniker, which makes it a namesake of Ford’s North American market bakkie – which is for all intents and purposes the world’s best-selling car.

Although Ferrari’s nationalistic intention with the F150 name was to pay homage to 150 years of Italian unification, we can help but think Maranello’s 2011 F1 car will bring more than few smiles to Ford’s executives. 

President of the Italian Republic, Giorgio Napolitano, expressed his appreciation when news of the naming initiative was delivered to him. He took the opportunity to wish the Scuderia the best of luck for the forthcoming season. Perhaps Ferrari's naming faux pass was an attempt to lift F1 ailing profile in North America...
