De la Rosa returned to his regular role as McLaren's long-time reserve driver in 2011 after an abortive racing comeback in 2010 with Sauber.
HRT said De la Rosa would race in 2012 and 2013 and that the signing of what looks like a 'Return of Schumie" wannabe would be "a fundamental pillar" in HRT's "renewed project".
The driver said: "I want to thank (McLaren boss) Martin (Whitmarsh) for giving me the opportunity to follow my heart. Without McLaren I wouldn't be here today."
