Moves are still afoot to return Africa to the F1 calendar.
In July, as South Africa hosted the football World Cup, F1 chief executive Bernie Ecclestone said there were plans for the construction of a new GP circuit in Cape Town.
"We've been talking to the people in South Africa for quite a long time, on and off. The chances are OK," the 80-year-old said.
A new report by German news agency SID said the Cape Town plans were still alive, with the feasibility of the project under examination by governmental economic and tourism authorities.
The report said the study involved considering whether a permanent circuit or a semi-permanent venue made more sense for the city.
Kyalami, north of Johannesburg, hosted 23 South African Grands Prix between 1967 and 1993.
