Button wins Australian GP

Melbourne - Reigning world champion Jenson Button driving a McLaren-Mercedes won the Australian Grand Prix on the Albert Park street circuit in Melbourne on Sunday.

Button claimed back-to-back Australian titles when he led for the second half of a compelling race to beat Renault's Robert Kubica by 12 seconds with Ferrari's Felipe Massa 2.4 seconds away in third.

Ferrari team-mate Fernando Alonso followed up his Bahrain GP triumph with fourth ahead of Mercedes GP's Nico Rosberg and McLaren's Lewis Hamilton.

It was 30-year-old Button's eighth win in his 172nd GP and he took full advantage of a braking fault from fastest qualifier Sebastian Vettel on the 26th lap to storm away to victory.

Alonso leads the championship with 37 points, ahead of Massa on 33 and Button on 31.
