This news follows rumours that the circuit was to have to closed from now until the end of the year to allow changes and upgrades that would have allowed its operators, the Western Province Motor Club, to host the South African round of the new A1 GP racing formula.

Club vice chairman Adrian Pheiffer explained that the circuit had been visited by Stephen Watson, general manager for the A1 series, to see if it would be suitable for a round of the A1 GP series.

He said Watson did not seem to favour using the most logical venue, Kyalami, and instead had been trying to organise a street circuit in Durban.

Those plans now seem to be back on track.

"It would have been very exciting to have had it in Cape Town, but it's not to be," he said.

"Killarney is not closed, as rumoured, and in fact it's very much business as usual".
