My wife loves GOLF, but I made sure to get rid of it. GERMAN cars are scrap. I buy cars or exchange cars every two years and I have had lots of different cars. I do not worry about the price, I worry about the quality of car, after sales services and cost to keep it on the road... My thoughts simple VW or german cars do not have that ability. I have had ONLY BAD experiences with german cars. JAPANESE RULES. I am already driving my SECOND Fortuner. Forums say bad things about this car -I NEVER EXPERIENCED. TOYOTA RULES - check the selling of Fortuner against the other vehicles of that class. |
the car looks UGLY!!!!!!!! period. it lacks STYLE!!!! |
I think wheels 24 journos are getting kick backs for good reviews. They dont even mention the price. Its still a 1.4 with only 90kw. Wheels 24 you are really losing credibility here. |
Why oh why???VW MMHHHHH |
Pricing of the G5 1.6 was the same reason I opted for a used 116i which was more value than the G5.
The G6 pricing is even more pathetic. Insuring a VW is also expensive. The only Golf that's justifiable is the GTi.
Good car but not worth it!! |
How does this compares to the NA 2.0L FSI engine found in the G5? |
@ Dumbfounded, I CAN CLEARLY SEE WHERE YOU GOT YOUR NAME FROM, THE 1.4 COST R227 000, Where did you get the figure R300 000 from?????????? Please comment when you have your facts right!!!!! Now it means its more value for money rather than that R241 000 CRAP MITO |
I am amazed by just how silly VW buyers are! How can you justify paying R300 00 for a 1.4 liter hatchback! And before you go saying "Well the performance is awesome" and "Don't forget it is turbocharged" people were saying the Alfa Romeo Mito was overpriced as a 1.4 turbo. The Mito puts out 114 kilowatts and "only" costs R241 000. Faster, cheaper, better looking, the end.
I drive a 2009 1.8 Honda Civic. It is better looking than Golf, considerably cheaper than the Golf, it's bigger in the front, its bigger in the back, it has a bigger boot and its Vtec engine is both powerful (103kw which is more than the equivalent 2.0l Golf 5, and more than the 1.4TSI Golf 6 and way mor than the pathetic 1.6 Golf 6) and incredibly economical. I have averaged 7.8l/100 over the 15000 kms I have done since January (driving like a bit of a spanner at times) and have just averaged 7.1l/100kms over the first half of my current tank (driving a combined cycle, sensibly, with not much highway driving). The Golf's claimed 7.3l/100 isn't as good and you probably won't be able to achieve that on the Reef.
If you have bought a Golf 6 you clearly have more money than sense and no nothing about cars... shame. |
This car is nice. And thats the biggest problem! It's just.....nice! I didn't notice any of the testers really raving about it. The truth is that you can get better, more exciting cars at that price. I would much rather get the Fiat Bravo 1.4 T-jet Sport which has style, quality AND performance. It is also interesting to note that the Renault Sandero outsold the G6 in August (429 units vs 388). So is it really "Das Auto", the car for the masses? |
Well, I do not know of many beach properties at R600 000. Must be somewhere not in SA then. Thx Charles for giving the facts. I think the problem why VW is not selling more of these Gols is because of availability. And I suppose it has to do with the importing of the vehicle and also because it is so popular in Europe. |
Thanks for a great article. Price? No problem. It comes at a price but G6 is worth every cent. I drive a G5 1.4 TSi 125 kw. 85000km on the clock. No turbo problems ,lots of power and very economical. Those of you who are complaining, you hav no idea what a real car is. VW RULE!!!! |
O h Please, Go and check the monthly sales for this thing in sa, only selling between 300-600 units per month.Merc C class and 3 Series double outsells it. Even the fortuner sells more. Compared to when the golf 5 first came out it was 1 of the top sellers for a while. |
2009
To be Europe’s top selling car is no mean feat but the sixth-generation Volkswagen Golf has done it in 5 straight months. In August 2009, the Golf sold 37,662 units, a 39.5% increase on the amount sold in 2008. August’s second biggest selling car is the Ford Fiesta, with 21,648 units sold. Coming in third is the Opel/Vauxhall Corsa with 19,818 units sold. As for top selling brand in Europe, Volkswagen was also Europe’s top selling brand in August with 104,589 units sold, ahead of Ford with 62,762 and Opel/Vauxhall with 56,894. According to JATO Dynamics, which provided the data, the year-on-year sales were up in all of Europe’s big five markets – UK, Spain, Germany, France and Italy 2008
1st Volkswagen Golf - 458,253 EU Sales
2nd Peugeot 207 - 406,163 EU Sales
3rd Ford Focus - 364,638 EU Sales
4th Opel Corsa - 360,274 EU Sales
5th Renault Clio - 335,548 EU Sales
6th Ford Fiesta - 327,314 EU Sales
7th Opel Astra - 320,856 EU Sales
8th Fiat Punto - 278,934 EU Sales
9th Volkswagen Polo - 275,921 EU Sales
10th Audi A4 - 255,474 EU Sales
So guys please give credit where it is due. If the Golf 6 is so bad why does
it outsell everything else in Europe where they have access to all the manufactures with the latest models available.
|
I've been driving my Golf 3 GTS forever.
Its done 325,000 KMs! Still on the 1st engine and gearbox. Love the car! |
Why cant all you haters just except that this car is the leader in the segment??? Its shows in the awards... Car of the year! Engine of the year! What more do you want??? They dont judge a car by its price or performance... But as a whole package!!! Now what does that say about the Golf... Its the best package!!! So what if it costs more than the focus etc. There is a reason for it! VW must be doing something right dont ya think??? |
Jean it's not R300 000 it's R600 000 one for him and one for his wife |
Jean, I said if you had to buy 2! Stop staring at the car in front of you and you would know where these houses/townhouses are. |
@duane: The Slogan has been changed a while ago from " For the love of peoples Car's" to " Das Auto". Also I just want Johan to tell me where I can buy a 2 bedroom beach house for R300 000? You all are complaining about how expensive this car is. Well then, you are not the target market for these cars then. Neither am I, but this is truly something to aspire to. I had the privilage to drive a Golf 6 GTI from Durban to Cape Town. It is truly an unbeleiveable car, I took it right to the limit in every gear. It never make you feal unsure or scared. @JB there is a 199KW 4motion vertion GTI-R coming next yer. |
Well assuming people like Mango are right and this shouldnt be compared to the Focus, then what should it be compared to? The A4 and 3 Series. In that case why not just go for a C-class? Dont fool yourself. This is a good car but the confirmed rattles on rough roads expose it and as it ages it will lose its glamour. SAve your money and buy what you set out to buy... hatch back is a hatch back. no use comparing the 3 series to an S class and telling us its too good for the C class. Which is what VW and its fans are all trying to tell us here! The new Focus will remain a hatch and be affordable.... and thatss how it will continue to outsell the Golf in the UK. |
@lex: you clearly have no debating skills, but at least you made me chuckle. thanks. |
Must agree with Kyle. Styling is for the show-offs. If the car is good and safe - I'm happy. And ja, this is expensive for a Golf, but its not just any Golf. From what I hear the car is quiet, spacious and safe. I see that as very upmarket transport. So quite acceptable if it comes in only 10% under a BMW or Audi. Remember, just because it says "golf" on the boot does not mean it should be selling at entrylevel prices. |
Never another Golf for me! I have had two, a 1979 LS and a 1988 Golf 2 CSL, but the new models are far too exopensive. I don't trust these puny turbo engines, and even the models I would consider, the 1,6 Trendline and the 1,6 and 2,0 TDI, are priced far above their rivals. No, I would choose a Chevrolet Cruze or Kia Cerato at a lot less. VW are pushing their luck, and soon they are going to suffer the consequences. |
8 Weeks with the car. Of course you'll get used to it. The most important impressions is the first 2 hour drive session. Styling is subjective. Did you not find anything alt all wrong with this car? My test drive revealed a few engineering concerns. Torque steer with he gutsy stressed little motor. Balance - doesn't have the 50/50 balance of the BM 1 Series for the same price - no actually lower price. And this affects the VW's roadholding when pushing. The interior quality and ergonomics do not reflect that of a R300 000+ car. And in the back of my mind always the nagging doubt of the reliabilty of this little highly stressed engine. |
I think we should all get the new hybrid honda scooters - with friggin lazers on them!! How cool would driving be then! |
@LEX I'm a mechanical design engineer, we design and manufacture machines, assembly lines, paint booths, body hangers etc for the Automotive Industry (ALL major Motor Corporations), we do work for VW, Daimler Chrysler (Merc with other words), Ford, Toyota and so on........ The TOYOTA i drive was exactly the same price as the oppositions brand prices, if you compare apples with apples then you will see that all Car brands are in the same bracket of +- R10 000 or so...... You are clearly not knowing what you talking about....... Lastly, the golf 6 1.4TSi base is R227,900 and the top of the range one is R272,900. You make it sound that ALL VW golf 6's are above R300 000!!!!! Read your first post...... |
Sorry but in all honesty the new G6 is nothing but an over priced piece of metal. There are far better cars on the market and a definately at a much better price.
VW should change their logo as they are no longer a peoples car.
Over priced rubbish |
@ Thomas, you surely are not a VW salesman but from your comments and as u have confirmed u r involved with VW with the Polo line assembly.......u like the sales men are just trying to protect ur daily bread...its understandable! |
@ Thomas, am gald you saw the sense that VW's are not people's cars! You being a "people" opt for a Toyota- a "people's" car, which is assembled on an assembly line too and is well priced for "People". The G6 is too expensive for "people". Enjoy your Toyota. Your neutrality on cars should not extend to a neutrality on cents! |
Thank you for a very balanced article. I bought on of the first Golf 6 TSi just as they became available. I traded in my Golf 5 TDi. I must admit that initially I missed the old shape (its still better) but I got used to the new look. It is an awesome car to drive. Next move is to upgrade to the Scirocco. |
it just a matter of time vw recalls them for new turbos or you got to replace it yourself. Just seen a tsi yesterday with a lot of white smoke at the rear. |
Ive been a VW driver all my life, I had them all. From G1 to G5, and this car really does not do it for me. I am looking for something that can replace my R32, but cannot seem to fine anything out there. Been test driving Audi, Mini, BMW, etc, but there are really a problem with prices with todays cars, u cannot get anything under R300k....shocking. |
Sorry meant Euro, not pounds |
@LEX I'm not a VW salesman, For 1, I drive a TOYOTA, #2, I'm neutral when it comes to cars and that gives me an open head when I comment on qualities on vehicles, #3 I was involved in the design and manufacture of the BRAND NEW ASSEMBLY LINE for the new generation Polo that will be launched next year, I have 7 years experience in this field, so I exactly know what it COST TO BUILD A VEHICLE!!!! Do you tell your Doctor what to prescribe another patient if you are only an accountant?? NO, so trust me LEX!!!! Last one, car prices never go up and down like a toilet seat, it's not the petrol price!!!!! If the pound goes to 3 pounds to the R, then you will DEFINITELY see the GOLF VI for R80 000 |
Have you tried the new golf 1.6 TDi? I have this car and I personally think it is better than the 1.4Tsi. Brilliant on the open road and has more power then the "old" 1.9 TDi.
There is not that big a difference between the Golf V and Golf VI but teh quality and ride are completly different. I always rated teh Golf V for its handling but the new one is just so much better. |
Styling IS as important as "under the bodywork". If it was not important more people would by Ssang Yongs. Tell me, do you like ugly chicks or is it only about personality? |
So there's a production cost saveing of 30% which ends up 0% as the import duties are 30%. Anyway, VWs are for lemmings that try justify paying so much for a bland car with statements like "you get what you pay for", well, you can by a much better car for the same money and still "get what you pay for". Driving a VW is about as exciting as catching a bus. They should call it a "cold hatch" |
Fugly, way over priced!!! No torque either. Rather buy a second hand TDi... |
It is great to see the positive feedback. People are always quick to judge on styling, forgetting that most of the car is under the bodywork :) I was looking at the 2.0TDI, but this article with the various opinions from the W24 guys made me think I should go testdrive the 1.4TSI. @Kike, it doesn't seem that VW will bring them out in auto, only the 1.6TDI and the GTI will have the DSG. I had a word with one of the dealership stock controllers, and apparently the demand for the autos aren't that big. I still don't understand why they don't have the auto as an option, seeing as you have to order the car from overseas anyways. |
Thomas u sound like a VW Salesman before a sale.....the cost saving made by VW AG (not VWSA) is 30% of the Golf 5 cost (why has this not being passed on to consumers) which is the reason the Golf will not be produced in SA, if the exchange rate was a huge factor, we have had a strong rand but this has not shown any price reduction. The car is an awesome car, but the cost is prohibitive and VW can do better with regard to pricing or provide more features as standard. @ supervan.....biased towards what? price sensitivity? state of the economy? or pure reasoning? |
@Lex.... Did you read the entire article, if not here is an excerpt...... and stop being biased "It’s not cheap by any means, but you still get feeling that you’ll get what you pay for, judging by its competitors." |
Just think if you and your wife buy one, you just missed an opportunity to finance a "good" 2 bedroom beach house in SA. |
@Lex. It is well worth the money, trust me. I drive a 2007 Jetta FSI, and if you look at comfort, quality and safety, it compares directly with Audi A4, which is much more expensive. You cannot compare a Golf 6 with the likes of Ford Focus or similar, the quality and comfort is not the same. You get a lot more unexpected features in the Golf that you won't find in it's "cheaper" competition. I would say that buying a VW is worth every cent. |
Might be good and all that etc etc. For the same money, I'd take an 18 months old A4 1.8T; C180 or 320, whichever works for you. |
It's not 30% of the Golf 5's cost. Get your facts right!!!!!! No2, the Golf 6 is imported!!!! Ever heard of the exchange rate Lex, please comment when you have your facts straight. |
@Lex.... Did you read the entire article, if not here is an excerpt...... and stop being biased "It’s not cheap by any means, but you still get feeling that you’ll get what you pay for, judging by its competitors." |
Agree. I drive the new vi gti. Great car. Much better car than the v gti. Feels more solid and well worth the extra cash. |
Been driving my TSI (90) for 10 weeks now, and the engine truly performs well and economically esp on the long road. Experience is spoilt by irritating interior noises when travelling across rough tarred road surfaces. |
The 118 super / turbo charged is even better. But the Scirocco is the No1 in this league... no other brand comes close, not even the G6 |
most modern cars are great to drive in this day and age, they use similar suppliers and the difference is really how everything comes together and concluded with a price tag. The golf at this price and having being produced at 30% of the Golf 5 cost just doesnt make sense. Love of People's cars.........what people? R300k is way out of reach of "people". I wish journalists could say it as it is- good car, but not worth the money! |
Good, so when do we get the 1.4 in DSG?
I'm hanging on to my old car until then. |
