New York - The winner of the World Car of the Year awards has been announced at the New York Motor Show.

The World Car of the Year honours went to the Mazda2, which has just been named as the South African Car of the Year too. Other finalists included the Ford Mondeo and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class. There were an initial entry list of 39 new vehicles from all over the world.

Based on the recommendations of a design panel consisting of four highly respected world design experts, the Mazda2 was also voted by the jurors onto the short-list of top three design finalists, together with the Audi R8 and Volvo C30.

The WCOTY awards were officially launched in January 2004 and are initiated by, organized by, and conducted by automotive journalists from all over the world.

A jury of 47 international automotive journalists selected the overall winner by secret ballot, based on their experience with each candidate as part of their professional work.

The jury members constitute a balance of representation from Asia, Europe, North America, South America, as well as other parts of the world.

"We are delighted that the 2008 World Car of the Year jury has chosen the all-new Mazda2 as their World Car of the Year," said Dan Morris, Mazda's senior managing executive officer in charge of marketing, sales and customer service.

"This is wonderful recognition which Mazda2 car owners and Mazda employees alike can celebrate worldwide.

"The all-new Mazda2 is exceeding our highest expectations, demonstrating it can compete and win against the best compact cars in any market in the world and is earning glowing praise at home and globally, having also won a number of Car of the Year awards around the globe, including South Africa, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Greece, New Zealand, and the RJC Car of the Year award in Japan."

First the news that the Mazda2 was voted S.A car of the year was very pleasing. To now see that it has also clicnched the WORLD car of the year crown is indeed a clear justification of the S.A. award. These choices are voted for by independant individuals with much experience in this regard, after the vehicles are evaluated in a very thorough manner by each panel member. An award not to be "sneezed" at. WELL DONE MAZDA.

I heard one of the judges of SA Car of the year explain the following on the radio last week. Because you cannot compare the finalists directly to each other (for example the Lexus LS460 to the Mazda 2), the winner is the car which is best in its class. Therefore, the Mazda 2 wins because it is best in its class, not because it is better than the other finalists. This makes more sense, but I don't take too much notice of these competitions. They omit important issues like resale and reliability. The results are also slightly misleading. Someone reading this article might come to the conclusion that the Mazda 2 is the best car in the world which is not the case since the competition is limited to cars launched since the last competition. This Mazda 2 must be good because it is also a CAR Magazine?s TOP12 winner.

I have for a long time held the view that our COTY is a worthwhile competition and up to scratch with international standards. This should serve as a wake up to call to all those MORONS who keep lambasting SA COTY, because they know better than the SAGMJ. Well done Mazda2!

I can only laugh at the id10t that asked how the Mazda2 was SA COTY if it wasnt World COTY! LOL In any case - SA COTY and World COTY has different criteria but KUDOS to Mazda for winning both! I think its a great achievement!

Any comments from all the people who have been saying the Mazda cannot compete with the likes of Merc and BMW in a competition of this sort? If you can't be objective about cars you shouldn't be commenting about cars, period. SA coty should be categorised the same way World COTY is, but thats it. COTY is simply awarded to great cars and the Mazda 2 is just that. All great cars don't have BMW badges on them!!!!! Mazda kicked merc ass :-) zoom zoom zoom

Just read their comments after the article "SA 'Car of the year' named". They were highly critical of the SA COTY choice. Although I must admit I agree with Junkie in that the Mazda2 is overprices, but so is most SA vehicles.
