Hey all
i purchased 1 of the first hummers in SA and drove the car for 300km before someone had skipped a stop street and crossed a national road before i hit them dead on at 100km/h.
I rolled the car serveral times and the car was a smashed.....
All i can say was i waled away with very little injuries and i am very impressed with the hummer as all the airbags deployed and i was very satisfied. P.s email me for pics |
I believe the H3 is also made in S.A. safety concerns due to Eskom load shedding. One wonder what happens in the dark.I think they tested one from S.A. |
Seems to me anything the Yanks make, or the Chinese, is inferior when it comes to their safety features.
Suppose with populations like that, who needs safety.
Gregg, you the man!
4 X 4 drivers are the 'Taxi Drivers' of the Bush and should be banned in Urben areas.
Yip Gregg, it does look like an X5 rip-off! |
I was going to buy a classic 1964 Ferrari 250 GTO for about 10 million dollars but considering that it has no airbags or even ABS brakes, I've decided to buy a bicycle instead and save some money. :) |
Why is it that Gregg always turns everything into a Blik Met Wiele talk ? In case you didn't know, the Hummer vehicle has been around for much much longer than the X5 has. As for Zonkee ... dude either you're sour and jealous for not driving a 4x4 or SUV or you're just smoking some good s**t ! For everyone's info and before comments start flying in ... I UNFORTUNATELY drive a BMW. |
is no safe car on the road/or in production today! As long as people drive them! Most crash ratings are given at 55km/h, while most serious crashes happen at 120km/h! Anyone can do their sums! - Cheers |
Back to the original topic though: There are compelling reasons for which some people do need SUVs, and I have no problem with that. However, there are many people rationalise their choice of environmentally disastrous SUV on the basis that they are safer (that and they feel superior driving a bigger vehicle). The irony of course is that their assertion is actually false, and they put themselves, their passengers and fellow road users at greater risk. So stupid and selfish if you ask me... |
The reason SUV's are a problem from a pollution perspective is that they create nearly twice as much pollution as a regular vehicle. This is because they are heavier and less aerodynamic, and subsequently require more energy to propel them. It is a simple matter of physics. Any argument about diesel vs petrol motor is irrelevant. Anyone choosing to buy a new SUV for everyday driving (ie where a regular car would suit their needs just fine) is *choosing* to create all this extra pollution whether they like to admit it or not. Its not a matter of affordability - its a matter of social conscience - and for that reason I would never consider an SUV as my primary vehicle. |
Diesel's density is approximately 1.1kg/l while petrol is around 0.9kg/l. This has 2 implications: 1) A litre of diesel requires about 25% more natural resources to create than a litre of petrol. 2) A litre of diesel produces approximately 25% more emissions than a litre of petrol. However (as every tom dick and harry knows) diesel motors get more mileage per litre. Overall diesel engines produce about 5% less greenhouse gases than petrol, and use up about 5% less natural resources. Unfortunately though diesel engines produce about 20 times more NOx than petrol engines. My point? Overall diesel engines are not a clean alternative to petrol. You score a little on greenhouse gas, but lose out on the toxic crap. |
Ok Curious. I think it is you who are out of your league: Both diesel and petrol are hyrdocarbons which can be derived from, among others, crude oil. When either petrol or diesel is burned, they produce a combination of CO (Carbon Monoxide), CO2 (Carbon Dioxide), H20 (Water), NOx - Nitrous oxides. CO & CO2 are greenhouse gases, and about 95% of people who are knowledgable on the subject believe to be responsible for global warming (and all the associated catastrophes that will be caused thereby). CO is also a poisonous gas if inhaled in sufficient quantities. NOx gasses are also known as particulate matter and are also toxic - contributing towards smog, acid rain, respiratory problems, cancers etc. A catalytic converter (CC)helps to ensure that the exhaust gases are converted into CO2 and H20 rather than NOx and CO. Therefore a CC does little to reduce greenhouse gases, but rather produces cleaner air which is non-toxic.

You all sound like school boys arguing about who's bicycle is the bestest. Grow-up and get back to work you little Sods. |
Manufacturers are so obsessed with part frontal impact that they forget to design a proper headrest to support the head in a rear collision. Just shoot them. Those headrests is for safety and not aesthetics. To those who don't believe in the unsafety of an SUV in a collision, it's just a case of centre of gravity, those who are the tallest, fall the hardest, especially in a side impact. The pure weight is not gonna save you if a smaller car is going under you and lift you up. |
With all due respect, having extensively travelled off road through Africa and back and beyond I truly have not seen any X5's off the beaten track, I can only imagine how many of the responses have been written behind the desk of a collar and tie person, the safety aspect is without question, bring on your M3 on a head on with my Defender, and as far as the ignorance with the environmental impact, rather spend your important time stopping property developers or squatter's.They do far more damage. |
Gregg, is there any vehicle on this earth that is not a rip off of any sort of BMW? These remarks are not funny anymore and actually very immature. Not that I am a H3 fan, it is definately a ripp off, but of no BMW I know. |
I also wanted to buy a BMW, but just couldn't get myself to start wearing white socks with black shoes!
(PS. What do you have hannging from the mirror? a CD?) |
The article mentions how IIAS sings the praises of the Nissan Murano but Euro NCAP have this week announced that the Nissan Navara has received a one-star rating! Euro NCAP are now calling for the Navara to be recalled - and rightly so. |
We all know that the CR is available in the commercial industry. The exhaust systems in SUV's are not. Regardless of the number of people they carry, the problem is the particulate content. Trucks, busses have no systems to regulate the smoke ratio, SUV's do. SA does not rate, in general, with the EU with commercial emmisions. And 95% of the taxis are petrol, by the way. The PETROL SUV, there is a problem, not the diesel. Check YOUR facts. |
to the real gregg the one with the BMW badge stuck up his ass. im sorry for making fun of you but you have brought it on yself. As for these suv killing the planet its obviuos that a car wighing 2.5 tons will pollute more than a htachback wighing half that. SO yes they are planet killers no matter what engine they have. Only suv that should be on the roads are the compact RAV 4 , CRv, Tucson etc as they use a normal car engine and dont have 4 wd which makes them heavy. |
Zonkee and Savage, so you are experts on vehicle emisions and the differences in particulates from diesel\petrol with the SOx, NOx, CO, CO2 values for each. Given the catalitic converters in each or the lack thereof and the average age and condition of the vehicle. I think you are out of your league ! or you cannot afford one ? |
Not Likely. It is a proven fact that you are more likely to kill or be killed in a 4X4 because of the far more rigid chassis than you find in standard cars. Contrary to popular belief they were not designed for parking on pavements, they were designed for the rough and rugged environments. Shaun, as a 4X4 fanatic, even I have to agree with the others. Of course, they are all using the environment thing. Pity they don't know about all the good real 4X4 drivers do for the environment. |
I am seriuos, the Hummer is a blatant ripp-off of the X-5, its sits high off the ground and its a 4x4- the side profile is a splitting image- America always copies BMW |
One question Shaun, are SUV's more dangerous and/or unsafer than regular vehicles in an accident?
It's a pity that you didn't bother to read the article or my post, as neither had anything to do with fuel efficiency.
BTW, the Hummer is NOT available in SA with a common-rail diesel, only a 3.7 litre petrol engine. |
Come on guys, read his comments - he is so obviously not being serious.... |
X5, 6 series? 4 wheels?
Gregg, what are you smoking, Boet? |
Shaun, YOU are the one that should do some research. Common rail engines are found in trucks, busses, boats, cranes, etc!! |
You can't give BMW (especially the X5 4x4 wannabe piece of crap) a bad name, cause they don't have a name.
Don't even talk about the H3 piece of rubbish.
As for USA vehicles. I drive a Jeep Wrangler, which believe me is far more superior & better quality than a BMW &
H3 Hummer. |
A common rail diesel Hummer ? Not heard of one of those ???? Dude, a Toyota Prius has moderate emmissions ! You sound like one of those morons that drives an SUV and has kids - Talk about Sh%tting in your kids backyard. They'll thank you for your efforts in 50 years time ! |
were allowed |
You're the only idiot, clinging to your denial about the damage caused by SUV drivers. 1) Do some real research on diesel. It makes a lot more pollution per litre than petrol does, so an SUV using 11 litres of diesel/100km is TWICE as bad as a normal car using 7 litres of petrol. 2) SUVs are more dangerous both to their own occupants and other road users than smaller cars - as proven by fatality statistics (deaths per 100 000 drivers) from the US. 3) You like to point the finger at Taxis, busses and trucks. On average a taxi has more than 10 people in it, meaning that even if it used twice as much fuel as your SUV, it still only does one fifth of the damage per person. Busses are even better (per person) and trucks carrying 5 tons of goods, are a lot more efficient than your average SUV carrying 120kg of lard on the front seat. |
Hey oaks please be real anyone can see that the hummer is a basic rip off of the bmw 6 series. It has 4 wheels and i saw a 6 series park near a pavement and the hummer was on the pavement. So yes its a complete copy. |
Shaun, you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.
The average SUV transports 1 person
Busses 70
Taxis in SA 20
Meaning if everyone had their own SUV it would have been much worse.
Same for trucks - if everyone had to drive 600km to go buy their tomato's at the farm...
Trucks, buses and taxis are therefor actually saving the environment
Think you should get YOUR facts straight |
Idiot. You uneducated types make the world tiring. SUV's, SUV's. The only 3 letters you know. What about the REAL culprits like taxis, busses, trucks? A modern common rail diesel in the SUV is fuel efficient and has moderate emmisions, do some research. Get proper facts you tree hugging wannabee. |
Gregg I know you are a BMW fan, but please don't give BMW a bad name with your comments (I sincerely hope this comment was posted by an iposter...). The H3 and X5 has no relation and there is no intention on either side to be so. I saw a black citi golf today, so is BMW copying VW with the X5? ;-) |
not surprised...american cars have always been overpriced rubbish, and no Gregg (ignorant moron) it is not a copy of an X5...it wish it was! |
? I had hoped for better considering how I enjoyed the test drive but this just shows that nothing has changed as far as US designed cars go!:( |
What do you expect from an American brick. |
The Hummer is a poor copy of a X5 BMW! This is obvious due to the fact that the Hummer is a 4WD! The first Hummer I saw, was black, a colout that has been used by BMW on the X5 since its launch!! |
Darwin postulated that the survival of a species, in this case humans, was dependant on the dumbest ones being eliminated, or eliminating themselves.
Drivers of SUVs and 4x4s embody this maxim in life, and most likely in death too.
Killing the planet and killing themselves! |
