New GWMs here, pricing unchanged

GWM has launched their second generation single- and double-cab bakkie derivatives as well as a SUV, all powered by fuel-injected 2.2-litre engines.

Set to be distributed amongst the more than 60 GWM dealerships spread throughout Southern Africa, the second generation vehicles are all powered by the same 2.2-litre, fuel-injected in-line four-cylinder engine, producing 78kW of power and 190Nm of torque.

The peculiarly morphed Nissan Hardbody styling, especially in the front headlight arrangement, has remained though.

Both the single and double-cab bakkies, as well as the Multi-Wagon SUV, feature five-speed manual gearboxes, 64-litre fuel-tanks and characteristically hard wearing and harsh riding unsymmetrical rear leaf spring suspension.

Utility and a generous dose of standard equipment are the key ingredients of GWM market appeal, and with all three derivates - including the double-cab bakkie and Multi-Wagon - able to take one-ton payloads, these GWMs are not shy of being worked hard.

Specification across the range is generous, even the standard single-cab bakkie featuring power steering, CD/MP3 player and electric windows as standard equipment.

The single-cab Lux and double-cab versions add air-conditioning, an adjustable steering column and mag wheels to their spec sheets, whilst the Multi-Wagon SUV features both front and rear air-conditioning.

Potential buyers are welcome to choose from a wide range of colours including Rosebud red, Taxi yellow, Bluish green and Imperial black. Utilitarian hues such as Bright white and Phantom grey are available too.

Value is strong though, with prices having remained unchanged and all models featuring a 24 hour roadside assist programme for the first 2 years/60 000km.

Prices:

  • Single Cab standard R89 990
  • Single Cab Lux R102 990
  • Double Cab R129 990
  • Multi Wagon R149 990

The same things were said about hyundai and I am sure the japanese faced the same rejection when they came, but the reality is GMW is here to stay; like it or not. Car prices in SA are a rip off; thanks to naive comsumers like you.

It is sad to see people lambasting GWM, have any of you driven one? have you seen the quality of workmanship? have you tried to get parts? try all these first then come back and post your comments, then lets see who has a negative comment. Charlie

Do any of the critics above have any formal qualification in this field? Maybe it is part of your daily job to show your incompetence? The fact is, that no pick-up will perform relatively well in a frontal impact incident? A friend was killed in the latest shape Isuzu double cab last year? the steering wheel got to his head. GWM passed all homologation standards in South Africa, or otherwise it could not have been sold. If you have a closer look at the windows, lights etc? you will see that it is marked with a big ?E?, this mean that the component is homologated by the ECE, if any of you know what that means, the same way it is on BMW, VW, Etc? So let?s put some money on the table and crash a GWM into a SMART, Fiat Uno, Kia Picanto, Toyota Tazz or Citi Golf, and base or comment on fact rather than fiction. Some motor group made mention that the GWM warranty claims are lower if compared to Toyota and Nissan, in the same group of dealers. It also a known fact that a large portions of parts is manufactured in China for BMW, Benz, etc? SO ? WAKE UP! How many of the SA pick-up models got a 5 star NCAP score??????????????????????????????
    Unbelievable

Can't most of you speak in a well behaved manner and give your commentary in the same way? Let other people feel as they want ant just give your opinion, please! I think that the GWM's already show that it can take a lot of punishment! The engine is good, but all are warried about the safety, Otherwise a good bakkie - did you look at the quality of the paintwork?

A number of you appear to be disgusted by the Chinese "rubish". While I agree that the cars are untested in SA, only time will tell the ability of GWM. I have heard horror stories about the MCM segment from China. I am however acutely aware of the falacy of generalisation. Time will tell.... Dont make the mistake of wrting off GWM. Get used to reality. The qaulity will probably improve with more dealers opening & parts supply improving.

A piece of CR@P the market is going to be full of this junk in 2 years, when they start breaking in droves and there are insufficient service centre's and pathtic warrenties to take care of them.

Wake up dude! Now you have a county who's car manufacturers REALLY do copy bmw styling (down to the nuts & bolts) and you praise them! What an idiot. If you were a REAL car enthusiast you would know this. Catch a wake up hypocrite.

Any of you been to China & seen how many of these so called rubbish bakkies are on the road? They get used all day everyday in the work place. They take a hammering and loaded beyond your comprehension & last years. Please dont think i am in anyway affiliated with GWM or any other vehicle manufacturer. Just that I have been living and working in China for a few years now and i am astounded by such bakkies. Personally i think a new GWM is better than a 5year old Isuzu with a "work history"

Gregg you ignorant moron...but then you drive a BMW. These things are known and tested deathtraps! rather than encourage the dumping of this hazard on SA roads they should be banned and thier makers arrested!!

Paint this thing with solid gold & it will remain a piece of Chinese Crap! A monkey in a silk suit, remains a monkey! it's starting to look better than the Isuzu's.... bwaaahaha!

A wile ago there was a lot of hype about the Citi Golf poor safety features (no airbags ABS) you don?t mention anything about GWM vehicles safety features? Does that mean another manufacture supplying cheap unsafe vehicles to the public? Wonder what the outcome will be if a GWM and Nissan Hard body come to a head on collision.

These vehicles would be a rip-off if they were given away. Maybe worth a look in 5 generations time.

For that price the bottom will fall out of the used bakkie market.. went to www.gwm.co.za, they have a couple of nice vehicles on the way.
