BMW launches new sport helmet

03/10/2008 11:36

In the early days of integral (full-face) safety helmets someone suggested that if you had a R500 head it would be OK to buy a R500 helmet. But times have changed.

Yes, you still get a massive selection of cheap helmets, but serious riders know that a shell of ECE standard isn’t the only quality component needed to guarantee maximum safety.

The helmet’s entire construction matters: the aerodynamic outer shell, EPS inner shell, aero-acoustic liner, visor quality, chin strap and fastening system. There are obviously also a number of smaller refinements that you can expect from a good quality manufacturer.

The new BMW Sport Helmet leans on the company’s sporting heritage and incorporates ultra-quality components to ensure the highest levels of protection, comfort and confidence.

Elegant lines and an advanced design of the 1 380 grams glass fibre outer shell (ECE 22-05) echo the Sport Helmet’s aerodynamic performance.

BMW has its own wind tunnel and made sure that they tested all the components to ensure the helmet’s aerodynamic performance is top-notch. The ventilation option of airflow all around the head also means that it is one of the best-ventilated helmets on the market.

To guarantee an optimum fit for every head shape, the lightweight shell is available in a choice of two sizes.

Internally, the Sport Helmet’s liner is made from high-quality, moisture-wicking Hydroplus, which can be removed and washed. This high-tech material provides a high degree of comfort and aero-acoustic qualities that reduce noise levels to an absolute minimum.

Safety is further enhanced by a chin spoiler, neck strap and an anti-scratch double-visor (optical class 2) designed to maximise peripheral vision. A practical ratchet lock enables the visor to be opened quickly and easily, even when wearing gloves.

“The Sport Helmet is one of the quietest full-face helmets on the market,” says BMW. “This combined with the lightweight aerodynamic qualities of the helmet and the sports styling make it the perfect helmet for the ambitious sports rider.”

The Sport Helmet is available in sizes 52/53 to 62/63 and a choice of five colours: white metallic, granite grey matt metallic, night black, sparc, magma and speed.
