Dirco tops with full points at PE

Dirco van der Westhuizen, all 12-years-old of him, has just had a fantastic start to the 2011 National Motocross championship.

The young lad from Pietermaritzburg blitzed his rivals in the 85cc class with consecutive wins at Port Elizabeth’s Rover Raceway. He won the first four races of the season so is comfortably leading the championship with a full house of 100 points.

Riding a YZ85, the former 65cc National Motocross champion won race one in style from local rider Bevan Potgieter (KTM) and Northern Regions’ Marcus Phelps (Kawasaki). He did it again in race two with Potgieter again finishing second but another local rider, Seth van den Beele, was third on a Yamaha.

TOUGH TIME IN SAND

Van der Westhuizen also took on the older riders in the MX Pro Mini class and finished seventh overall after fifth in race one and seventh in race two. By his own admission, the youngster was dog-tired in the second 85cc Senior race after his heroic efforts in the Junior class and the notorious soft sand of the track drained him of much of his strength.

The two races were won, respectively, by Zane Farquharson of Northern Regions on a Honda and Nicholas Adams of kwaZulu-Natal on a KTM.

The next round of the championship will be at Melkbosstrand in the Western Cape on April 23, 2011.
