VALENCIA, Spain - Australian Casey Stoner finished the final qualifying session of the 2011 MotoGP season more than a second ahead of the rest of the field for his record-equalling 12th pole start of the year.
The record was set by five-times World champion Mick Doohan in 1997.
Stoner's Honda team mate Dani Pedrosa will start second and Yamaha's Ben Spies third.
EARLY BENCHMARK
Stoner topped the times in the first two free practice sessions on Friday ahead of Sunday's season-closing Valencia MotoGP
The Honda rider set the early benchmark with a time of 1min45.513, with team mate Dani Pedrosa 0.223sec back in second and multiple former champion Valentino Rossi's Ducati third at 0.315sec.
Germany's Stefan Bradl secured the Moto2 World title by default on Saturday when nearest rival Marc Marquez was forced to withdraw from Sunday's race in Valencia.
Bradl has a 23-point advantage over Marquez, who has not recovered in time from sight problems caused by a crash at the Malaysian GP in October.
Repsol said in a statement: "Marquez will not take part in today's practice or in tomorrow's race so the Moto2 title will be for Germany's Stefan Bradl, with whom he has fought a hard battle in the second half of the 2011 season."
