DETROIT, Michigan - Harley-Davidson is recalling nearly 46 000 motorcycles in the US because they could stay in gear due to defective clutches.
The problem was found through customer complaints and Harley said the company knew of 27 reported crashes and four minor injuries.
The recall covers certain 2014 and 2015 Electra Glide, Ultra Limited, Police Electra Glide, Street Glide, Road Glide and Road King models.
Harley-Davidson said that gas bubbles could cause the clutch master-cylinder to lose its ability to fully disengage the clutch, especially if the bike had been parked for a long time.
This could cause a rider to lose control of the motorcycle if started in gear.
Dealers will flush the clutch and rebuild the master cylinder. The recall has already started - including in South Africa. Wheels24 sent some questions to Harley-Davidson SA, and here's what they sent back to us...
Q: Is South Africa affected by this recall?
A: Harley-Davidson Motor Company has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists with the hydraulic clutch system with master cylinder part numbers 36700056 and 36700049 on certain MY 2014 and MY 2015 Touring motorcycles – FLHTCU, FLHTCU TC, FLHTCUL, FLHTCUL TC, FLHTK, FLHTKL, FLHTP, FLHX, FLHXS, FLTRX, FLTRXS, FLHRSE and FLHXSE.
The affected motorcycles were built between April 28 and Oct 24 2014 in the US and from March 10 2014 to March 25 2015 in Brazil.
On the vehicles, the hydraulic clutch system may exhibit a condition in which it may lose the ability to generate enough lift to disengage the clutch after being parked for an extended period. If this condition remains undetected, it could lead to a loss of control of the vehicle when started in gear or first shifted into gear after being parked for an extended period.
The cause is a chemical reaction inside the sealed clutch system which creates gas bubbles that may cause loss of clutch lift.
In vehicles in which this condition is present the customer may notice a large amount of “free play” in the clutch lever when they first squeeze the clutch after being parked for an extended period. Based on this information, Harley-Davidson is voluntarily recalling 54 496 vehicles that have been shipped worldwide that may have this condition, including 45 904 shipped within the US.
The company is notifying dealers and customers to ensure their safety on this issue. Customers with the affected product should arrange service with an authorised Harley-Davidson dealer which will confirm the motorcycle is covered by the recall. If covered, the dealer will flush the clutch system with the recommended wash solution and rebuild the clutch master cylinder using the recall kit (Part No. 91500083) provided at no cost to the customer.

A: There are 25 409 MY 2014 bikes that would have also been recalled due to the September 2014 hydraulic clutch issue (see Q9 above) – MY 2014 FLHTCU, FLHTK, FLHTP, FLHX, FLHXS, FLHRSE.

A: There have been eight, including three which were specific to the Trike.
