DOHA, Qatar - Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo - paired for 2013 with former arch-enemy Valentino Rossi - will start the first MotoGP of the season in Qatar at the head of the pack.

Lorenzo was also on pole here back in 2012 with a time then of 1min55.302 and Saturday's lap also gave him the 52nd pole start of his career.

Rossi qualified only seventh, a second slower than his team mate.

Second and third respectively were Cal Crutchlow who led much of the quali sessions on another Yamaha and Honda's Dani Pedrosa.
