No choice! ABS on all BMW bikes

BMW Motorrad's 2013 new-model programme will include a number of model updates - the main one that anti-lock brakes will be standard on all machines.

A great step forward for motorcycle safety indeed! And it includes South Africa...

br>BMW Motorrad claims always to have been aware of its social responsibility in connection with motorcycling safety. In 1988 it presented the world's first production machines with ABS – the most effective technical safety bonus to this day.

PRE-EMPTIVE STEP

"Now follows the next logical step," the bike-maker says. "As of 2013, BMW will be the world's first to provide ABS, standard, on all models - a pro-active step clearly pre-empting the requirement for ABS likely to be introduced in 2016 for all new motorcycles in Europe."

The South African model range will have ABS standard on all models from the beginning of 2013 due to production prioritisation and shipping lead times.

For non-bikers, a locked front wheel on a motorcycle means an instant and generally painful dismount; for a car it merely means a skid. Bike ABS means steering control can be maintained even in an emergency stop and that means a rider can not only rapidly decelerate but also steer out of trouble.

Here's how the model ranges will change...
