Fuel-cell Suzuki breaks cover

Intelligent Energy, a leading clean power systems company, in partnership with Suzuki, has unveiled their latest joint development in clean fuel transport systems at this year’s Tokyo Motor Show. Meet the Suzuki Burgman Fuel Cell Scooter.

In 1997 the two companies wowed us with their Crosscage fuel cell concept, but with the scooter the partnership is hoping to make fuel-cell powered two-wheeled transportation more accessible and to demonstrate the potential of a emissions motorcycle in reducing emissions around the world.

Intelligent Energy’ fuel cell is air-cooled, light, compact and structurally simple – so lends itself well to mass manufacture. A 70MPa hydrogen tank, the highest-pressure tank ever used) allows for a highly-usable driving range.

“Of course, these clean fuel cell engine powered motorcycles are not simply for motor shows, and can be widely available to everyone in the near future,” commented Dr. Henri Winand, CEO at Intelligent Energy.

“With a mass market of about 40 million units per annum, there is a lot to go after. As part of this process, Intelligent Energy and Suzuki will continue to work on clean fuel cell powered motorcycles and plan to hold demonstrations of the fuel cell scooter in the near future.”

It is expected that the Suzuki Burgman Fuel Cell Scooter will be available for demonstrations in Europe in the next few months.
