Electric production motorcycles will benefit from multi-speed gearboxes for the first time when US company Brammo’s cracking range of four new models is officially launched.
Although design for these four prototypes is yet to be finalised it is what lies underneath their striking exterior that is more noteworthy.
Thanks to a strategic partnership with Italian firm SMRE Engineering, Brammo will be offering the new models with a six-speed transmission when they eventually go on sale, a move the company hopes will boost performance and range.
SPEED TRADE OFF
The first application of the new 'integrated electric transmission' will be on the Brammo Engage and Encite models. Engage models come in three variants – off-road orientated motocross and super moto racing models as well as a tar-biased super moto street version. The Encite MMX PRO is a pint-sized version of its larger and more powerful motocross sibling.
Craig Bramscher, CEO and founder of Brammo, said: “It is fundamental to Brammo’s success that we continue to innovate and develop our strong reputation for high-quality, exciting motorcycles. Combining the SMRE integrated electric transmission with the Brammo batteries and Battery management system keeps Brammo at the forefront of powersports drivetrain technology.”
According to the company, battery motorcycle design has always been a bit of a balancing act in direct-drive systems where great acceleration performance comes at the expense of low top-end speed.
With the new transmission system Brammo hopes to provide the best of both worlds.
