Beefier Triumph hooligan

Triumph's acclaimed Street Triple has just gained a higher-spec sibling. Meet the 675cc Street Triple R.

This latest addition to the Triumph line-up benefits from a brake and suspension upgrade that elevates it close to the Daytona 675 as a hooligan tool for street or track.

The “R” version also benefits from fully adjustable front and rear suspension lifted from the Daytona 675, along with four-piston radial front calipers mated to a radial master cylinder – components usually reserved for top-flight supersports machines.

The engine of the Street Triple R is the same Daytona-derived mill as is used in the standard Street Triple, which means that it hits the wall at 12 675 r/min rather than the 14 000r/min of the supersport machine. Its power (at 79kW) has been reduced by 15kW.

Overall gearing is lower than the Daytona’s and power delivery less peaky, all this making the R a delightful weapon to take to a street fight.

All three British 675cc offerings (Daytona, Triple and Triple R) essentially use the same frame, but the Daytona and the R offer more aggressive rake and trail than the standard Street Triple, as well as the ability to adjust the rear swing arm pivot angle if desired.

The new Nissin radial master cylinder of the R is mounted on a set of tapered Magura handlebars, the same as those offered on the 1 050cc Speed Triple. Also, the KYB rear shock with its piggyback reservoir is three-way adjustable for preload, compression and rebound damping, while the black anodized upside-down front forks pinched from the Daytona offer similar versatility.

Just to finish the package off, the Triumph Street Triple 675 R comes out of the crate with a two-tone black and graphite seat mounted 5 mm higher than that of the standard version.

The Triumph Street Triple R retails for R93 500, just R10 000 more than the standard Street Triple and R6,000 less than the Daytona 675. It is available in Matt Graphite and Matt Blazing Orange.
