Aprilia's red-hot RSV4 here

2009-07-01 09:50

Aprilia’s RSV4 Factory, claimed to be the world’s most advanced superbike, has finally arrived in South Africa and it’s clear designer Sergio Robbiano has kept his 2006 promise that “everything else will be old after the RS4”.

The Aprilia RSV4 is the only V4-engined superbike in production, and it's already proved to be competitive against the best that Japan, Italy and Germany can serve up at the highest level of superbike racing. Max Biaggi is fifth in the world superbike riders’ championship halfway through the RSV4’s first season of competition, and Aprilia lies at a comfortable fourth in the manufacturers’ championship.

According to Aprilia the RS4 is as close as you will ever get to the real WSB deal. The adjustable geometry chassis allows parameters such as the position and inclination of the steering head, and the height of the rear swingarm pivot to be adjusted. The positioning of the engine in the frame can also be altered to change handling characteristics to suit rider preferences and different circuits.

The Factory version that’s just arrived has Öhlins Racing front forks, with their 43mm stanchions titanium nitride coated to minimise friction. As in Biaggi’s and Shinya Nakano’s race bikes, the forks allow precision adjustment of pre load and compression and rebound damping.

Looking after the rear end is an Öhlins Racing shock absorber that can be adjusted for pre load, compression and rebound damping, and length, allowing ride height to be optimised to suit rider preferences.

Brakes up front are some of the finest radial calipers, Brembo monoblocks, mated to 320mm diameter stainless steel floating discs developed by Aprilia especially for this machine. A Brembo “Serie Oro” system utilising a 220mm stainless disc and dual piston caliper with a racing type pump and integrated reservoir slows down the rear wheel.

Naturally it was a challenge for Aprilia to develop a brand new four-cylinder engine – their first – which would be capable of delivering the performance the chassis deserves. The Italian engineers’ creation is said to be superb, though, and Max Biaggi proved it at Monza in May by establishing a new World Superbike top speed record of 326km/h.

"The super compact 65 degree V4 combines the factory's mechanical engineering know-how, gained in winning well over 300 World Championship races, with state of the art electronics, to produce a truly significant engine for the 21st Century," says Aprilia.

The bike utilises full ride-by-wire technology with no mechanical link between the twist-grip and the throttle valves, which are controlled by the latest generation Marelli control unit.

Each cylinder bank has a dedicated servo unit, actuating the relevant throttle bodies only, allowing the processor to manage the fuelling for each cylinder independently. Three engine mapping programmes are available, controlled from the handlebars, allowing the rider to change the power delivery mode to suit prevailing conditions.

By using a 65 degree V-angle layout rather than the 60 degree of their V-twins, Aprilia was able to build the engine very over-square, with the resulting large bores allowing for very big valves and high revs. The bike allegedly revs happily to 14 200  r/min and produces its peak power of 132kW at 12 500 r/min, with the torque peak of 115Nm arriving a little earlier, at 10 000 r/min.

To keep control the weight of the RS4 as tightly as possible, Aprilia’s engineers made use of ultralight materials for the engine, with all valve covers and external housings being made from magnesium. The frame, at just 10.1kg, weighs virtually the same as that of the twin-cylinder RSV, while the trick aluminium swing arm weighs just 5.1kg.

The Aprilia RS4 Factory is the closest you are likely to ever get to the WSB version, but at R245 995 this privilege doesn’t exactly come cheap.

To ease the blow Aprilia will throw in a 24-month unlimited distance warranty.

    Technical specification
    Engine: V-4 cylinder, 4-stroke
    Displacement: 999.6cc
    Bore x Stroke: 78 x 52.3mm
    Max torque: 115Nm at 10 000r/min
    Max power: 132.4kW at 12 500r/min
    Dry weight: 179kg

I agree with Anony. 7/1/2009. Not once in the history of man, has a manufacturer launched a new 1 liter super bike, that marketing hasn't banged - on endlessly, on what a spectacular scoot this is and how it makes the opposition's scoots "out dated" over night. They all do it, all the time. When Honda launced the "new" Fireblade a few years ago, it was suppose to be the new bench - mark. It in fact, at the time was the heaviest, slowest, and least powerful of the Jap big 4. Recently, Kawasaki painted the same spectacular picture with the new ZXR. In reality its anything but spectacular (besides in the the S.A Superbike series with Shez in the saddle) it's a complete dog in WSBK.

@ Anonymous User 7/1/2009 3:25 PM yes you tosser, read the first paragraph or can't you read, guess not. "Aprilia’s RSV4 Factory, claimed to be the world’s most advanced superbike, has finally arrived in South Africa and it’s clear designer Sergio Robbiano has kept his 2006 promise that “everything else will be old after the RS4”. From there is goes pear shape making more "wonderful" claims that only marketing could throw up. Yep, 1098R is a 1198, which now is used in ALL 1098's bar the exotic internals and the 1098 is demoted down to the new Street Fighter, sorry to all you 1098 owners who paid R180k plus now with the 1198, worth squat...New RSV is a nice bike but sorry, be realistic, in 6months it will be in the tests again and lable as....slow turning...lumpie box..etc...they did it with the R1,K9, ZX10, RC8R,Blade...this crap gets fed to us so we will BUY it then months later you are told oh, no it's not that good really. There is NOTHING the RSV4 does that is not already being done....I find it rich that this article/Aprilia claims that EVERYTHING else is "old"...pity, at WSB the R1,Duke AND Blade are whipping it's ass on the straights and in the corners.....so go figure..

This is an awesome bike. But won't swap my 2005 RSV factory V-twin for this. Wouldn't be the same without that deep sound... V-Twin rules!!!

Anon 12h22 - you conveniently forgot to mention that the Duke is in fact a 1198cc for WSB to keep up with the Jap fours. WSB always bend the rules to make slow bikes faster otherwise the Japs will wipe the floor with the Dukes any day of the week. And don't get me started on reliability or rideability or backup either. BTW the Aprilia is a good looking bike - nice effort for their first V4.

At ExboyRacer, yep and what do you think a Ducati costs? Euro superbikes (KTM, Bimota, MV Augusta, Ducati, BMW) are always so expensive compared to their Jap counterparts (I can somehow understand MV Augusta and Bimota as these are true exotica in the bike world). TopSpeed is impressive, faster than MV augusta. Howver I still think the MV Augusta F312 smokes the pipe in Superbike leagues. But at this money ill settle for a CBR1000

WTF??! And I thought the R1 was getting expensive - but according to this article it is still half the price of this Aprilia. And to think the R1 is twice as good on the track, so, does it mean the R1 is 4 times more bike?!!

You have to look at price if you want to compare the RSV4 to a 1098R. Last price I saw for a 1098R was R442,400.00. Apparently the RSV1000 V4 Factory will sell for R245,995.00.

This is a gorgeous bike, but I'd still rather have a Duke 1098R, which in my opinion is one of the most beautiful bikes. Also for half the price, you can get one of the top Jap bikes. I'm not sure on pricing of bikes as I haven't checked for some time, but I'm sure a 1000 Kawa or R1 must be about half the price, and I'm also sure that they push out around 132Kws too. A 1/4 of a Bar for a Bike is huge money.

At that price I hope they don't sell a single one! I would have loved to have bought an Aprilia, as I don't like the Jap stuff and Ducati is too pretentious, but not at this price.

No thank you. I'll rather safe R80 000 and buy a R1. The Yamaha is advanced enough for me.

I own a Factory, fantastic bike, with sh#t back up service from 3 diff. dealers, engine blew at 6000km but was told by present importers that they could not carry warranty from previous importers, all i wanted was a discount on the spares which was refused from Aprilia S.A, so guess what!!!

Beautiful machine but what crap claims.1st, Yamah is HAMMERING them and that with an ALL NEW BIKE,first production crossplane motor ever.2nd Ducati 1098R has been out for YEARS and is the SAME bike as the WSB bikes bar the SAME changes Aprilia are allowd to make keeping within regs.V4..that is the ONLY thing that stands out but so what, Duke V2, Triumph triple,Yamaha inline4 crossplain,All other japs including BMW inline4....so what...V4 wooopeee, next..If someone ties to now argue that the Duke is so much more WELL, you get ALOT more bike as even the Factory comes only with stock pipes, 1098R comes with Race and stock system...etc...So sorry Aprilia, marketing crap you trying to feed us, first start wining at WSB then win a Championship THEN you have street cred, right now, you grasping at straws and sucking R1/Duke dust in the process.
