American MotoGP rider Ben Spies will miss the 2012 Australian GP on Phillip Island because he needs surgery to repair injuries sustained in Malaysia on Sunday, October 21, 2012.
His Yamaha team said the Texan, team mate to championship leader Jorge Lorenzo, had a shoulder separation, a cracked upper rib and bruising to a lung after falling in the wet race at Sepang.
WON'T BE REPLACED
Spies said in a statement: "I took a really hard knock on Sunday and it's now clear from tests that I have some injuries that require immediate attention."
The team said Spies, who will join Pramac Ducati for the 2013 season, would go home to the US to recuperate and wouldl not be replaced for the season's penultimate race due to the lack of time.
Spies is 10th in the championship with 88 points to Lorenzo's 330.
