CLEVER TWIN: Honda’s new 700cc parallel twin engine solves a lot of packaging issues whilst producing great mid-range power.

Honda has taken the wraps off a new 700cc parallel-twin engine, which the company says will only sip a very impressive 3.8-litres of fuel for every 100km.
The new powertrain will be making its debut in three different 2012 models, which are all slated to make their first international appearance at the EICMA in Milan later this year.
Boasting powerful torque in the low- to mid-speed range and impressive fuel efficiency, the new liquid-cooled four-stroke in-line twin's output can be channeled by either of Honda's new generation transmissions.
Honda says the new 700c twin can be mated to the second-generation Dual Clutch Transmission or a classic six-speed manual.
According to the company, they developed the new mill “to realise a set of motorcycles based on its new concept of offering outstanding fuel efficiency in the mid-class.”
TWO TRANSMISSION OPTIONS
No performance figures have been made available yet, but Honda says the new engine will deliver “powerful, throbbing torque” in the normal range for touring and urban riding.
Only one of the designs which will be treated to the new powertrain has been shown to date – a maxi-scooter which combines a mid-mount engine with larger wheels for a riding experience more similar to that of a standard motorcycle.

SENSIBLE SOLUTION: Honda’s parallel-twin promises to produce excellent throttle response and a characteristic throbbing beat…
Honda's rationale?
Well the company says it determined the engine layout after examining a variety of engine types from numerous perspectives and decided on an in-line, 700cc, two-cylinder engine with a 62-degree forward leaning cylinder assembly angle.
The engine is said to boast a high combustion efficiency and several low friction technologies to bolster its fuel efficiency.
A 270-degree phase crank, uneven-interval firing and uniaxial primary balance will ensure “a pleasant throbbing feel” while also reducing unwanted vibrations.
