Gildenhuys leads bike champs

Reigning South African Superbike champion Greg Gildenhuys of BMW retained his lead in the 2011 championship with two second places in round five of the 2011 championship at the Aldo Scribante circuit in Port Elizabeth on August 6.

Rain made qualifying difficult on Friday but conditions improved on Saturday. Gildenhuys qualified fourth behind former champion Sheridan Morais (Kawasaki), Nicolas Grobler (BMW) and Kawasaki's Julian Odendaal.

Gildenhuys made a good start to the first race and was second behind Morais into the first corner. The two were never more than a few tenths of a second apart throughout and Gildenhuys took the lead on lap three.

FOURTH TO SECOND

Morais regained the lead on lap seven and increased the lead to four-tenths at the finish. Gildenhuys was denied a last-lap passing opportunity when a back-marker got in the way. James Egan (BMW) was third ahead of Chris Leeson (Kawasaki) and Grobler.

Gildenhuys dropped to fourth after starting third in race two but caught up with Morais on the second lap. His inability to keep the BMW’s front wheel on the tar when exiting corners kept him in second place.

Egan was fourth behind Morais, Gildenhuys and Leeson with Grobler again fifth.

The next round of the 2011 championship will be in East London on September 3.
