2012-07-10 11:48

READY TO GO: Several-times winner Reg Gurnell is signed up and ready to tackle the another Bike Econorun in August.

The 31st national Bike Econorun is preparing to take a loopy 1100km route from Pretoria to Hazyview in August and if you’re keen to ride along, entries for the two-wheeled economy run are now open.

The run will head from Pretoria to Hazyview via Polokwane in Limpopo on August 17 and 18, 2012, starting at 8am at sponsor Retirement Fund Solutions’ head office in Magalieskruin, Pretoria.

The event, which combines two days of touring while riding as economically as possible, is due to finish at Hazyview’s Numbi Hotel on the Saturday, where post-race scrutineering and the prize-giving will take place.

FUN AND PRIZES GALORE

Clerk of the Course Francois Jordaan said: “This annual run demonstrates the fuel economy capabilities of well-maintained and skilfully-ridden standard, modern motorcycles under varying conditions over a selection of South African roads.

“With the high price of fuel and general rising costs of operating and maintaining our chosen form of transport, it is important to know what can be achieved by careful and sensible use of a motorcycle, while observing all road and traffic regulations."

The event covers 12 classes for standard production bikes: touring, dual purpose, cruisers, pillion, sport and a class for modified machines (they don’t qualify for the overall winner’s trophy, though).

Apart from the winners’ trophies, a special draw of the first three finishers in each of the qualifying classes will go into a hat for a R10 000 prize, while another “secret prize” will also be revealed at the final prize-giving.

The entry fee of R2500 includes the cost of fuel, accommodation, a competition licence and food. Entries close on July 31. Go to econorun.co.za for more details.
