PIKES PEAK, Colorado - Ducati's Carlin Dunne dominated the 2012 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb at the weekend, setting a course record for motorcycles from pole position for the second year in a row on a Ducati Multistrada 1200 S.
The win marks Ducati’s third consecutive victory at the historic "Race to the Clouds".
Dunne and Ducati team mate and six-times winner Greg Tracy finished the race in less than 10 minutes, a first for any motorcycle in the race’s 90-year history. Dunne crossed the finish line at the 14 110-foot summit of Pikes Peak in 9min52.819 to beat his previous record of 11min11.32; while Tracy was less than six seconds behind on 9min58.262.

“Today was an emotional day,” Dunne said. “The team's year of work put into preparing for Pikes Peak got us across the line in under 10 minutes, an achievement of which we're very proud. I was speechless when we heard we'd won and broken the record for a second time. The 1-2 proves the Ducati Multistrada 1200 S is the ultimate bike to conquer Pikes Peak.”
Dunne reached more than 230km/H on the mountain’s straights, took 156 curves ranging from hairpin through blind and decreasing radius to multi-apex, while consistently gaining elevation on the technical 20km course. The "Race to the Clouds" is run in a range of the Rocky Mountains, 16km west of Colorado Springs, and goes from 2862m to a finish line at 4300 - four times the height of Table Mountain and two-and-a-half times higher than Johannesburg.

"When we were alerted that the entire course would be paved in 2012 there was no doubt that the Multistrada 1200 S was still the right choice - breaking the record today proves this."
