Mongolia is not the first-choice destination for a motorcycle odyssey, unless you're the marketing man for a Chinese bikemaker and keen to show how reliable your products are – all for a good cause.
Meet Anthony Jackson. He works for Sinnis motorcycles and to aid leukaemia research he’s decided to ride all the way from Brighton in southern England to Mongolia to compete in the Mongol Rally 2011.
A LONG WAY ON A 125...
For most the prospect of simply completing the gruelling Mongol would be challenging enough but Jackson’s so confident of his Sinnis Apache’s 125’s ride comfort and durability that he’s decided to ride all the way across Europe and Asia to the start of the event too.
That’s a neat 16 000km – on a 125cc bike…
Although most endurance racing off-road motorcycles usually sport engines of 400cc capacity (or more), Jackson's Apache’s is a garden variety commuter bike of only 125cc. Its four-stroke single-cylinder engine is good for seven kW, which should mean he will be changing down the five-speed gearbox quite often during his adventure.
Brave man - or patient, at least.
CROSSING 12 COUNTRIES
Anthony left Brighton on July 22 bound for the legendary Goodwood estate in southern England, where he will ride around the circuit, before heading for Dover to make contact with Europe.
He will crossing 12 countries and hopes to cover 480km day, crossing without support some of Earth’s toughest terrain in mainland Europe, Eastern Europe, Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Mongolia.
Jackson’s Sinnis Apache supermoto has been fitted with a heavy-duty chain, hand guards, an engine guard and a rack that can carry nearly 50kg.
