Birch wins Winterberg Enduro

New Zealander Chris Birch (KTM) won the 36th Castrol Winterberg Enduro on August 12/13 at Loerie in the Eastern Cape. It was Birch’s maiden Winterberg win and the fourth win from five starts.

The race was the fifth round of the 2011 National Enduro motorcycle championship.

Class E1 (Open) and E2 (200cc) competitors had to complete the 13km timed stage three times and the motocross-type track twice. Birch posted the fastest times after four of the five timed stages but lost time during the first short stage when he got lost on the mx-track. Marc Torlage (Yamaha) won that stage and finished second overall, 21 points behind Birch, making it his fourth E2 victory of the season.

GUTZEIT THIRD, YOUNG ACHIEVES BEST FINISH

Three-time winner Jade Gutzeit (Yamaha) finished third, 45 points behind Torlage and 66 ahead of Altus de Wet (KTM), who finished fourth overall and second in E2. Brian Capper (KTM) finished six points behind De Wet.

Louwrens Mahoney (Yamaha) finished sixth overall and was 66 points behind Capper, who was ahead of Riaan van Niekerk (KTM) and his team mate Darryl Curtis. Port Elizabeth youngster Timothy Young (Honda) achieved his best result in the 2011 championship with a ninth position overall and third in the E2 Class.

In the Senior Class defending champion William Gillitt (KTM) bagged his fourth victory of the season with Stephen Landman (Gas Gas). Mike Morris (KTM), who is second in the class championship, kept his position even though he finished fourth. Bruce Gargan (Yamaha) was third and Peter Jung (KTM) fifth.

TORLAGE'S DOMINATION CONTINUES

Defending Master Class champion Denzil Torlage (Yamaha) won his fifth consectuve race ahead of Mark du Plessis (KTM). Stephen Stofberg (KTM) finished third with Barries Barnard (Honda) fourth. Graydon Ilderton (KTM) rounded off the top five.

The 2010 Junior National off-road champion Tyron Miller (KTM) won the Silver Challenge Class ahead of Simon Warne (KTM) and national off-road competitor Christopher Webster (Yamaha). Class leader Dricky Morkel (Yamaha) finished 11th.

The final round, the Champagne National WFO Enduro, takes place on September 10 in Champagne Valley, KwaZulu-Natal.
