Guy Martin didn’t even know that his motorcycle had burst into flames following his spectacular crash at the Isle of Man TT earlier this month. In a video interview the English rider said he hadn’t even realised his bike burst into a ball of flames following his 274km/h spill, until he had seen photos of the crash.
Martin’s accident took place during the Senior TT race on Friday near Balleygary, one of the fastest sections in the course and one of the corners that would be “at the top of the list of corners not to crash”.
According to the rider his front wheel lost traction as a result of the extra weight of a full fuel tank following his pitstop moments before, and he jumped ship when he realised he wouldn’t be able to save the slide.
Martin’s Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade exploded into a ball of flames on impact, resulting in the Senior TT being red-flagged for the first time in its history. He suffered broken ribs, fractured vertebrae, bruised lungs from the crash and twisted both his ankles. The race was won by Ian Hutchinson.
