Wandering into the wild on a 'great trek' with the family for the holidays means one usually needs a trailer with off-road capabilities that will match your 4x4. A Jurgens XT140 off-road trailer is one such.
An XT140 trailer has been used at the Klipbokkop 4x4 Academy in the Western Cape, near Worcester, for a “Great Trek” – following the route of trek leader Piet Retief from Fort Beaufort in the Eastern Cape all the way to Ulundi in kwaZulu-Natal.
It has been in use for six years at Klipbokkop and has travelled across 11 African countries, covering more than 11 000km over some of the toughest terrain.THE GREAT TREK
Its latest “trek”, accompanied by eight 4x4 vehicles, was to commemorate the 175th anniversary of the Great Trek (1835-38). The journey, undertaken by the Federation of Afrikaner Cultural Associations (FAK), set off from Graaff-Reinet in the Eastern Cape on September 16 for a journey scheduled to end on September 28, 2013.
According to Gerhard Groenwald of the Klipbokkop 4x4 Academy and the “trek” leader on this journey, the South African-designed trailer has proved islef over some of the worst off-road conditions and terrain on earth.
Groenewald said: “The XT140 has survived the muddy sludge of the rainy season in Mozambique, the dust and thick red sand of Namibia and the culverts and washed-away trails of Zambia – and during our latest quest it again proved how durable and reliable it is.
“Not taking into account the distance covered off-road, the Jurgens has clocked up nearly 100 000km in the past six years, and it is still in good condition.
“As expected, we didn't encounter any problems with the trailer on its most recent journey – testimony to the good quality of the Jurgens’ range.”'TOUGH AND DURABLE'
Jurgens Trailers GM Pierre Malherbe said: "To produce reliable and durable trailers capable of withstanding the tough Southern African conditions is as crucial now as it was more than a century ago. Just as the intrepid travellers of yore relied on their sturdy ox-wagon to reach their destination, so outdoor enthusiasts and 4x4 adventurers now depend on a good, reliable off-road trailer to negotiate challenging routes and conditions.
"Our XT range of off-road trailers has been designed specifically for South African conditions so is tough and durable – as proved by our flagship XT 140 used by the Klipbokkop 4x4 Academy which again showed its mettle on this commemorative journey.”
