WOLFSBURG, Germany - Volkswagen, in collaboration with Audi and Porsche, showed off its next-generation off-road vehicle at the Paris auto show way back in 2002.

Since then the Touareg has gone through two generations and become an SUV success story for the automaker. It has earned its motorsport stripes in the Dakar Rally since 2003.

This year, 2012, VW is celebrating 10 years of its 4x4 with a special edition "packed with style tweaks and extra kit".

'CHROME AND STYLE' PACK

The Touareg Edition X runs on special 19" alloy rims and buyers will have the option of a blue paint job.

The model benefits from a sunroof, roof rails, bi-xenon headlights with LEDs and darkened rear light clusters. In addition, the "Chrome and Style" designer pack ads tinted side and rear windows as well as Touareg X logos.

The interior has leather trim with a new embossed finish. Decorative inlays have been added to the doors and instrument panel and the door sills have illuminated Touareg X lettering.

The package adds new stitching to the leather steering wheel, gear lever and fabric floor mats.

The Touareg Edition X can be ordered in the UK with a choice of five engine/gearbox combinations, including a hybrid version.

Prices begin at the rand equivalent of R696 398 for the 150kW V6 TDI BlueMotion Technology model with eight-speed auto but, sadly, it won't be freely available in South Africa.
