Supercharged Prado really cruises

Keen on driving from Alexander- to Walvis Bay? A supercharged Prado would make for quite a convincing dune-climber.

If you own a new Prado V6 and are perpetually in a hurry (or tow a three-axle caravan) perhaps a Vortech supercharger is in order.

Toyota’s latest Prado (launched late last year) is powered by an evolution of the Toyota 4l V6 dual VVT-i engine, rated at 202kW and 381Nm.

You would think those outputs are quite sufficient for most applications. The Land Rover Discovery 4’s V8 produces 276kW and 510Nm though.

This power output discrepancy (between the Prado and Discovery 4) has opened up a market opportunity for aftermarket tuners keen to monetise South African customers with a penchant for towing (near maximum capacity most of the time) with their SUVs.

RG Motorsport’s now supplies a neat charge-cooled blower conversion for the latest generation Prado.

The supercharger upgrade swells peak rotational force from 381- to 540Nm, whilst boosting power by 124 units to 326kW.

Facilitating these performance car output figures is a Vortech centrifugal supercharger.

Cognisant of severe local operating conditions (high intake air temperatures), RG Motorsport’s engineered a water cooled charge-cooler to ensure intake air density is optimized. This charge-cooler is mounted atop the intake manifold.

A recalibrated ECU harmonises the additional forced-induction and cooling modifications to the 4l V6’s operation parameters.

During in-house testing, RG Motorsport found the modified Prado trimmed four seconds off the stock 4l V6’s benchmark 0-100km/h time - the 326kW Prado being good for a hot hatch baiting 8.6 second 0-100km/h dash.

The RG Motorsport Prado conversion retails for R90 000.

Would a supercharged Prado make for the ultimate sand-driving machine?
